Get a pack of Mr. Clean Magic Erasers which can be found at nearly any grocery store. Then cut a sliver off one and use that to clean your stylus. Lots of people suggest putting the sliver below the stylus and lowering the needle, but I have found that gently raising the Magic Eraser to the stylus will remove any gunk like a magnet.

I second this. I just want to add to one thing. When you lower the stylus down onto the piece of magic eraser, do not move side to side. Just gently up and down. The stylus is very delicate and moving it sideways could snap it.

If my turntable can automatically lower and raise my arm and stylus, would you recommend doing that with the magic eraser?

It may work, but I suggest lowering manually if possible.

I just bought a pack this morning to try it out. Will I notice any dirt on it, or will I just have to trust that it's working?

Dust and lent tend to be closer to a light gray color than black, so it may be hard to see. I say just trust it, hopefully your ears will be able to tell a difference though =)

I use a q-tip with rubbing alcohol on it.

Stylus cleaning is definitely recommended. My stylus doesn't really get dirty because my cartridge has a built in brush and I clean my records with a Spin Clean and an anti-static brush, but when it does I just carefully use the brush that the cartridge came with.

As far as cleaning kits go, I've heard great things about the Onzow Zerodust, but I personally don't own it so I can't comment on it.
