Too drunk to hold the camera?

TIL I want some Bacardi 151

You've never had Bacardi 151?? Oh man.. just be careful, will fuck your ass up in a hurry!

[–]vhold 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't just be careful, simply just cut yourself off if you're drunk. When you get 151 wasted, you have no idea how wasted you truly are.

LOL oh boy, iv had way too many nights drinking 151, it smells/tastes like nail polish remover straight, with pepsi or coke it's not AS bad, but still pretty strong.

I do so every night I think LOL

Not really a "LOL" so much as a "check out AA". I'm not saying you're an alcoholic now, but if you're honestly drinking every night you're on your way.

[–]kyleisagod 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I drink almost every night. The key is control. I only ever have one or two units if I drink every day. Very very rarely more than that, which is equal to one or two beers, a decent glass of wine, or a scotch.

[–]Eso 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm the same way. A beer or two after work with the wife just about every day.

Binge drinking is for the weekends.

[–]kyleisagod 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't even like to binge drink on the weekends, I only binge drink with friends at events. I mean, I'll maybe have another beer or scotch on weekend days, but binge drinking is for days where I have NOTHING to do the next day and have some good reason to drink a lot.

[–]kenada 3 points4 points ago

[–]LordTimbob 1 point2 points ago

That actually would taste pretty good, I hate Dr Pepper, but with JD it's good, so with 151 it should be less strong too Id think. Man I couldn't drink that shit every night, your liver hates you hahaha.

[–]desEsseintes 0 points1 point ago

You can't even taste it after a couple of shots worth because by then you're already wasted. In my experience, it is a very very bad idea to let anyone take advantage of this fact to mix you a drink that contains 4 shots of 151 and as much coke unless you want to spend the next 3 hours engaged in colourful exchange with the toilet.

[–]rnawky[S] 28 points29 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Read the wikipedia link.

A flame arrester (also spelled arrestor), deflagration arrester[1], or flame trap[2] is a piece of equipment installed in an industrial process to stop the propagation of a deflagration traveling along a pipeline by extinguishing the flame[3]. Flame arresters are used on storage tank vents, fuel gas pipelines, storage cabinets, the exhaust system of internal combustion engines, Davy lamps and overproof rums.[2].

Basically the mesh helps prevent the flames from traveling up the bottle by limiting the amount of oxygen that can get in.

Fun fact: Old miners lamps have two layers of mesh that work in a similar way to allow an open flame without blowing anything up if flammable gases leaked into the mine.

[–]bobcat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The mesh conducts the heat away - it does not stop oxygen. See miner's lamps.

[–]MrJandels 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an ex-cocktail maker I can attest to it's flammable nature, that shit goes up. The reason I was told that they have the mesh on is that the bottle literally erupts in shards of flaming glass if the stream ignites. I want to see this very much, but preferably from quite an epic distance

[–]rufflesdance 44 points45 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you use a juggle twist as opposed to flair flip the bottle you can light the trail it forms as it leaves the bottle.

For epic, quick and safe-ish flame tricks I have two favorites.

After you have made a cosmopolitan cut off a thumbsize bit of orange peel and make sure you get rid of most of the white plinth. Now with a lighter heat up the peel between two fingers. Once you start to get tiny sparks of flame on the peel point it over the top of the martini glass and squeeze the peel together. It will take a bit of practice but a flame should shoot out over the glass. Now rub the peel around the edge of the rim. This will give the drink a subtle taste of citrus. It also leaves a fine black mist over the drink which smells great and of course it looks pretty cool.

Far more impressive but far less practical. When people order a few galliano shots pour about 15 mls of slightly heated galliano in a line behind the shots with a slight pool at the end on the right hand side. With the tips of your fingers in pool on the right hand side, light the left had side of trail and when your fingers catch fire bring them up casually to your mouth and blow them out. If done right your finger tips should each have a small blue flame ontop of them which you can then turn into mini fireballs.

When someone [girls] order Lemon Drops [shots], put a bit of sugar on a plate, place down lemon wedges, drizzle with a bit of 151, light on fire.

The flame heats the citrus oil, it squirts out and burns brightly, the sugar melts into the lemon wedges.

Do the shot, bite the caramelized lemon.

I have seen a brandy bottle go up in someone's hand as they were pouring it into a skillet. The skillet was hot over a lit stove and the brandy went into the bottle almost instantly. The guy got a few stitches and was back to finish the shift.

I almost had it happen to be with a bottle of sherry, but I was quick enough to put my thumb over the mouth of the bottle and kill the flame before it went up. You wouldn't believe the suction that caused.

While in college I learned that Bacardi 151 makes an excellent and seriously potent pina colada.

[–]rnawky[S] 8 points9 points ago*

Really!? I've only used Coconut Rum for Pina Coladas. I'm going to try to make one with the 151 now that you mentioned it. Brb.

If it doesn't taste good, I'm going to be disappointed.

EDIT 1: Finished making the drink, tasting it now

EDIT 2: Meh, I think the coconut rum tastes better.

I work as a cocktail bartender. I wouldnt waste the 151 or the coconut cream. If you are not doing shots or flaring use it in a mojito as I have found that the only way to make it balance. (Taste good). Also, make sure you slap then stir the mojito. Never shake.

If you enjoy it then its not a waste and don't let any wanker bartender/person tell you otherwise.

Plus... You are mixing with the nectar of gods... Even 151 would go well with that.

[–]Seeda_Boo 1 point2 points ago*

Did you use Coco Lopez cream of coconut to make your colada? If not, that's another ingredient upgrade rec.

Coconut rum was my brother's go-to for colada-making as well, until he tasted one made with unflavored rum and Coco Lopez.

But we must respect the rule of successful boozery: "To each his own buzz."

[–]diablosinmusica 58 points59 points ago

Why do people even drink Everclear? I bought a bottle as I needed to use it for alcohol distillation. Of course I only used a few ounces so I have a fifth sitting in my freezer that I will never drink.

[–]bobcat 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mix with water, make your own vodka. That is how vodka is made.

Or, extract essential oils from herbs and spices, use in cooking or drinks.

Or, get some dry ice, make a cloud chamber.

[–]Ashex 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The cloud chamber idea sounds rather awesome. I'm assuming I combine dry ice and alcohol inside a sealed chamber then watch the clouds form around particles in the air?

[–]Ashex 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I may have the 150 proof, I'll have to check. If that's the case I'll just boil off a little to raise it.

[–]ismokeblunts 0 points1 point ago

[–]johnnyonthepot 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was my first thought, and I have had Bacardi 151 before. Although I don't remember seeing the flame arrester either, of course it was a while ago...and I was drinking 151.

[–]swordgeek 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

FWIW, the last time I bought Bacardi 151 in Canada, it didn't have the flame arrester. Don't know about now.

However, it's crap rum. Crap rum with added alcohol to make otherwise undrinkable crap appealing.

[–]gvsteve 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But then why doesn't everclear have a wire mesh? Isn't it even more flammable than Bacardi 151?

[–]supadude 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That things 95%. Besides it's clearly written :

CAUTION: DO NOT APPLY TO OPEN FLAME> KEEP AWAY FROM FIRE, HEAT AND OPEN FLAME. CONTENTS MAY IGNITE OR EXPLODE, DO NOT CONSUME IN EXCESSIVE QUANTITIES. NOT INTENDED FOR CONSUMPTION UNLESS MIXED WITH NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES.

Although I don't know how much you want to read it when your drunk.

Bottles of 151-proof rum have a similar flammability warning on them.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

to borrow another poster's answer: going up in flames is probably safer than drinking Everclear.

As a college student, I firmly agree with this sentiment. There are never good & safe Everclear nights, just nights were the police report is the best source of information of what exactly happened.

[–]rnawky[S] 1 point2 points ago

[–]bobcat 2 points3 points ago

190 proof grain alcohol does not have a wire screen. If you have grain alcohol and dry ice, you can make a cloud chamber. :)

Also, it does not 'explode' even if you light an open bottle. It does go whoosh and make a 'blue genie' in the bottle, which can heat the glass and crack it to unfortunate results.

Water puts out the fire instantly. Have lots ready when playing with alcohol.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the problem is that usually playing with alcohol+fire also involves drinking alcohol. Fire+alcohol=fire department+police showing up.

[–]drcross 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nice! Can anyone please suggest other mixes for overproof rum? It seems like a useful invention if you were going somewhere (like a prolonged boating trip) and didnt want to carry lots of booze. A bit like space meals for Alcho's

[–]diablosinmusica 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sprite/7up/or Serra Mist usually mix well with rum and would probably solve you'r space needs.

Not to preach too much, but if you are going boating, camping, hiking use the saved space for WATER!!! I know people who have gotten pretty close to dieing while of the river with only alcohol and soft drinks for hydration.

[–]BoonTobias 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually now that i think about it, it could've been another brand but it probably is C&C, the only way to make sure is it's the only brand that has ginger ales in 3 liter bottles. They don't make smaller sizes. The ginger ale is a bit more powerful than Canada Dry or Schweppes so mixing it with 151 makes it awesome.

Also, rum and diet coke will fuck you up faster than other mixes, but can also lead to throwing up faster because of how sweet it is.

[–]Ninjapants 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I always serve Caribou Lou at my parties and everyone loves it. You can play around with the recipe but most of the time I do:

  • 1.5 oz Bacardi 151

  • 1.5 oz Malibu Rum

  • 5-6 oz Pineapple Juice

Mix it all together, serve chilled and add a splash of OJ for flavor.

You can barely taste the alcohol and if you use only an ounce each, it's even better. Careful though, the drinks are much stronger than they taste and will creep on you after a couple. Enjoy!

[–]abcadaba 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How is a bottle going to have enough oxygen to "explode"? I have serious doubts about the reason for the wire mesh. After all, bottles of Everclear don't have it.

[–]Stingray88 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's what the mesh is for, limiting the amount of oxygen getting into the bottle. That and it helps keep out the flame from the start.

Regardless it's not a mandatory thing. Bacardi 151 is a more expensive brand and they put it on there as a courtesy for you. I haven't seen many brands of everclear that weren't "cheap".
