I'm a 19 year old girl, and this is how I got into Star Trek:

I'd ignored it for my entire life as something stupid and geeky. Then my guy friend brought me to go see Abram's movie. That's what hooked me. After that, I devoured TOS (because it was the same characters, and it was interesting to see how the reboot movie changed the timeline). I loved the sort of campiness of it (I'm a fan of Doctor Who, new and original series, so it had that same appeal). The fact that the episodes are mostly standalone helped, because it wasn't a huge commitment to watch just an episode here and there.

Now that same guy friend forced me to watch the first episode of Star Trek Enterprise (I'd made myself a promise to only watch stuff with the Kirk crew, haha). But I loved it. :( So now I'm steadily working my way through Enterprise, with plans to watch TNG in the (far) future.

Um. So basically my advice is the Abram movie first. It's what'll appeal to her most, and once you get her hooked with that, you can move on to the admittedly more geeky parts of the franchise.

You haven't lived til you've watched TNG. You can come over and watch it at my house!

Tbh, I don't know if I'll like it quite as much as the original series. There's just something about that set of characters, and the ridiculousness of the standalone-type episodes that made it just so much fun to watch.

Also, the 3 season length (and only 4 for Enterprise) makes it a lot less intimidating to watch. I'm one of those people who watches TV shows from start to finish, and the 7 season TNG run seems a little daunting. :\

And given your account name, your latter offer has to be met with the look of disapproval, lol.

What? I had lost my pen when I created my account and was trying to locate it. Dirty mind + Star Trek fan... how you doin'?

...Oh my god. I thought your username said 'do you know where my penis' and I was even going to joke about you accidentally the last word. D:

Shit, I do have a dirty mind. My apologies. 'Sup.

no apologies necessary. I did realize that this name would be seen as "penis" most of the time, though :) but I got you to admit your dirty mind. WIN

I agree. I started my girl with TNG S5 to end and she was hooked to the characters. Then you can introduce TNG movies, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise to rip on together, then Old school so she knows who the guy from generations and the reboot is. Too bad the Las Vegas experience isn't around to cement a real life experience for ST.

my girlfriend is the one who got me into trek. do you think intercourse has anything to do with it?

Female POV here:

I say Star Trek IV is the best thing to get a girl into the series. I'm a female who is a huge trekkie - IV was my first exposure and I loved it. It's got the humor element going for it. I personally wouldn't start with II - there's a lot of violence, fighting, great for action, but not necessarily the kind of thing that would lure a female in to wanting to watch more. After IV, I'd say VI, because it's so much similar to a mystery/suspense movie.

I also would recommend Abram's film - it's got all the usual elements; most of the girls I'm friends with that have seen it have liked it a lot - even the first timers.

You need to tell her "TOS or GTFO!"

Seriously though, go the beginning. If she doesn't like The Cage or Where no Man Has Gone Before or some of the other early gems, well...there are other fish in the sea. ;)

Wrath of Khan is obviously required viewing, and she'll probably really enjoy the The Voyage Home. But you should should probably make her suffer through Search for Spock, just so it all makes sense.

Uhm. Maybe you could just accept that you and your girlfriend have different interests and that that's probably for the best?

I mean, can you imagine what you'd say if some girl posted to r/television that she was on the verge of breaking up with their boyfriend because he didn't know anything about Sex and the City?

I'm not saying that you shouldn't try to introduce her to a show you like (in this case, Trek), but if she's not interested you shouldn't shove it down her throat (insert your own blowjob joke here).

Anyhow, I don't know that the movies are a great starting point. I'd probably start with some of the better episodes of TNG and go from there, if she enjoys them.

If i was trying to shove it down her throat I'd make her watch everything from the beginning. The point here is to introduce it to her in a way that she decides she likes it or at least gets enough of it to know what I'm talking about.

Do you think starting with the new movie is the best plan? I'm worried if i start with that she'll find the rest dated and not be interested. Thats one of the reasons why i thought of starting with TOS movies.

If i tried introducing her to star trek with the TOS stuff, I don't think she'd be giving TNG, DS9 or anything else a chance.

Errand of Mercy. Bitches love Errand of Mercy.

You've got to pique her interest first, man, get her interested in the concept and the universe and the characters. It helps when they are young & hot.

She has taken a quick liking to DS9, and while she hated the Ferengi in TNG, she absolutely loves Quark's character and the constant struggles he and Odo have with each other. She's also beginning to gush over Odo as she did once over Data.

She's a keeper. If she likes Odo now, she'll LOVE him by the end of the series.

I like your movie plan. Don't start with Encounter at Far Point. If you want to throw some tv in there, I'd say go for a 'best of' each series - TOS and TNG at least.

[–]aamo[S] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd agree. I don't like the idea of making her watch an entire season. I think picking and choosing episodes is best. I was only thinking of starting with far point because of the fact that it was the first TNG and it might serve as a decent intro.

[–]DrJulianBashir 1 point2 points ago

Season one is so bad though. I'd say show her The Inner Light.

While it is a good episode, its not exactly super treky. I mean, the ideas are but there's not a lot on the ship or sci-fi. Might be a good ep to introduce Picard though.

[–]DrJulianBashir 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm thinking more of a hook. It's such a good episode I'm hoping she'll love it and want to watch more. You're right about it being a good intro to Picard too. If this episode doesn't make her care about him, I'm not sure what will.

I agree with unijambiste - I'm a 20 year old girl, and I first got hooked by Abrams' movie. Then I went out and watched TOS. To be honest, at first I was all about the eye candy and heroics, which TOS has a lot of.* Then do the whole Wrath of Khan/Search for Spock/Voyage Home bit. If she likes it, point her towards http://community.livejournal.com/ontd_startrek, 'cause it's less dude-dominated than most star trek websites, and they are full of wonderful, flaily, girly glee for the series.

*I have to note - not because I'm a girl, but because I'm me. And if she's like me, than that's a good place to start. I didn't want to seem like I was making general declarations based on gender, since that's all shit :)

EDIT - particular favorites that I would recommend starting with in TOS - Balance of Terror, Trouble with Tribbles, Doomsday Machine, Menagerie I and II, The Corbomite Maneuver, This Side of Paradise. If you want to start with Next Gen, start with something awesome like A Matter of Honor. I remember watching Encounter at Farpoint and nearly giving up, because it was so boring and blaaaaaurgh.

Show some to her. She'll either get it or she won't. That's just the way it is.

[–]aamo[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But i want to give her the best opportunity to "get it". If i show her III or V first, she probably won't want to watch any of the rest.

[–]jswhitten 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd start with a few of the best TOS episodes, just because Wrath of Khan will make more sense if she's seen Space Seed first. Also, don't skip III because IV doesn't make as much sense without it (why were they on Vulcan? why are they on trial? when did the Enterprise blow up?)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except that three is really bad. There are some really classic TOS episodes that everyone interested should watch at some point. Arena, the Edith Keeler must die episode, Journey to Babel, and the Pon-farr are a few.

[–]jswhitten 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think it was that bad. Not as good as II and IV, but better than most of the others. I'd still recommend watching it before IV. You can safely skip I, V, and VI though :)

I agree with the above list (Arena, City on the Edge of Forever, Journey to Babel, and Amok Time). To that I would add Space Seed, Where No Man Has Gone Before, The Menagerie, The Trouble With Tribbles, Balance of Terror, The Doomsday Machine, Mirror Mirror, The Enterprise Incident, Day of the Dove, Errand of Mercy.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Those are all good episodes. TOS is weird because there really are some amazing episodes and then there are some that are unwatchable.

Yea, i figure i can just be like: shit happened, Spock came back to life...had to abandon the enterprise..stole the bird of prey, killed some Klingons.

24/F here:

Abrams first. That's going to be the easiest transition in and there are hot guys which is generally a good selling point. Then some episodes from the first season of TOS where Kirk is looking foxy and Spock is a fucking bad-ass, move on to the highlights of TOS and then Khan and the better ST movies. TNG is going to be a slightly harder sell I think.

If you are going to watch the movies you have to already know the characters. I would suggest picking your favorite earlier season of your favorite ST flavor (TOS or TNG if you really want to watch the movies) and watch the whole season first. If she cannot make it through a season then you need to beam her back to where you found her.

[–]aamo[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think i need to start with a movie simply because they are one offs with a cohesive story. I'm worried that jumping into a season is too much of a time commitment for her. If she likes the movies then maybe I'd try starting her on a season. I think the TV shows only work if i cherry pick the best episodes.

[–]jswhitten 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That might be a good idea. If you want to do this, I'd start with the latest movie (it's good even if you're not a Trekkie, and chronologically comes before the rest of TOS anyway), and then if she likes it go back to the top 5 or 10 TOS episodes and then the movies starting with Khaaan.

[–]pteridine 0 points1 point ago

I only say this because I was introduced to firefly through Serenity and I would have preferred to have seen the series first because I knew what was going to happen in the movie. Best of luck!
I suppose I would start with The Voyage Home myself for someone who has not seen the series.
