Anyone interested in doing a /r/newzealand crowd chart on politicalcompass.org to compare where we all sit politically? (self.newzealand)

If you are take this 'test'* and post your results (see mine below).

Once enough people have contributed we can use the Crowd Chart to show how we compare politically. We can chart our results as often as we like and anyone can do it.

Should be very interesting, once we have a decent number of results, to see the political spread in this subreddit.

I'll start:

*Not actually a test but a series of 62 propositions you can choose to strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree with.

The political compass test administered on that site is leading and contrived. Very difficult to answer. I know where I usually place with it as I've taken it many times, but I have too many issues with their questions for my position to be very accurate.

edit: and I'd be happy to explain which questions are stupid and why if anyone's interested.

I agree with you.

My views on cultural equivalency, astrology, revenge, infotainment and the beautiful product of bottled water have little or no bearing on my political outlook.

They've put together a bunch of biased questions to lead you into giving their preferred answers. The traits they are questioning us on are not political traits but more simple correlations ie US rightwingers tend to be religious and racist so we'll ask questions about religion and racism. Summing up complicated issues into a agree/disagree format just isn't deep enough.

Wikipedia article that could be relevant: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_spectrum. This test (though it's made by the libertarians!) is a good start and is always interesting. I'm not sure it's as scientific as some of the others though. A while ago there was a great paper by a geologist who did a principal components analysis of politics in the UK -- I think he found two major components, relating to economic opinion, and attitude to integration with Europe. (Not really sure. Perhaps someone can find it.)

I wonder what a 'strongly agree' does to your scores, left/right or up/down.

You're right that it's not to do with politics (like the racism questions imo) but I find it an interesting point to bring up in conversation. It's a statement which easily defines the critical thinking skills of the person you are talking to.

I often use this type of statement about astrology, homeopathy, TCM or chiropracty when I'm not quite sure if I'm talking to an idiot, the problem with a disbelief is that it's still not proof that the person is not an idiot - proving a negative is difficult.

Oh well, even if you are, it might help someone else. Chiropractic is the biggest medical scam after homeopathy and TCM. The wiki article covers most of the problems but it's in wikipedia's typical impartial POV. The NZ controversy about them calling themselves doctors when actually, they're not doctors at all.

For heaven's sake, if you need to get some joints (or stuff) adjusted, go to a proper orthopedic physiotherapist. New Zealand's got a great education programme for physio and you can depend on them not to damage you further. Unlike chiropractic which be dangerous for two reasons: 1) your problem doesn't get treated and can get worse and 2) they "manipulate" the spine and skeleton in an unscientific manner which can pinch nerves, damage joints or even paralyse.

Check it for yourself, of course but you should probably steer clear of them. If you like walking and stuff.

Hmmm. They're much the same as chiropractors - an alternative medicine that focuses the skeleton.

From what I know (admittedly not a lot), the manipulation isn't as strong or as violent as chiropractic so your chances of actually getting injured by them aren't high. But there's also no strong evidence that they will cure your problems. Wikipedia classes them in the same group as herbalism, homeopathy and naturopathy - fake medicines which we call "alternative medicines" to avoid hurting the feelings of those who get sucked in.

Always be wary of stuff that's called alternative medicine. It's only called that because it doesn't work. If it works, we just call it medicine.

I found myself answering 'strongly' agree/disagree on a few, even though I tend to think of myself as a moderate in most respects. I think this shows I'm not really moderate at all when it comes to certain things. Well, I guess it depends on relativism.. I don't think it's extremist to want to guarantee reproductive rights for women or allow homosexual people to marry/have children.

Seems a bit tamer than last time I took it, maybe I've mellowed a little.

I agree with those mentioning that it's not a very good test. It's a bit leading and many of the questions (nearly all) are far more complicated than a +agree, agree, disagree, +disagree answer can measure.
