Fatal Frame series for me is the scariest of the horror genre. Maybe it's because of the fact that in all horror games, all the monsters are physical in appearance and nature whereas in Fatal Frame, you have ghosts which can appear anywhere.

Take for instance Amnesia. The monster itself isn't all that scary, but can you imagine how the game would be if you replaced it with ghosts that could go through walls? It could appear wherever it wanted and doors would be no problem. The state of panic you would be in would be increased because your safety blanket would be removed.

Think of this scenario; you're running from the ghost and try hiding in a corner facing away from it. The music fades away and you think you're safe for a second and BAM, you see the ghosts face RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FUCKING FACE!

That's ok. I had been thinking of getting a new wii for the new Zelda and could potentially softmod it

I've never experienced....intensity from a horror game. I've always felt they were fairly boring. I feel the same about horror movies.

My girlfriend hates this part about me :( She refuses to watch horror movies with me because I have no reaction. Without the horror, it's just a baaaaad movie.

I'm the same way... The only horror movies I can enjoy are the one with with otherwise interesting concepts. Saw 1, The Langoliers, Resident Evil, etc.

Langoliers?! That's not a scary movie......the book was good the movie was just bad.

It's in the "Horror" genre on IMDB. shrug I sorta liked the movie - it was almost line-for-line the book.

Fair enough you win :) I didn't think anyone else in the world has seen it besides me that's what shocked me the most

The STALKER series has a genuinely creepy atmosphere that pervades the game world, when you then go into a bunker (one example) that has stuff you know will be scary the tension ratchets up a few notches to genuinely scary. When you finally get back out there's still the unnerving atmosphere to keep you unsettled so you never really get to relax.

I also like the extremely black nights of the Complete mod. Especially hearing the bloodsucker noise when all you can see is what's in the beam of your flashlight.

Sounds very interesting, will have to check that out.

It's great. I've never played anything that gets the black night feeling better. There are some nights with moonlight too. But I can't remember if lunar cycles was a feature added by the mod or not. Regardless, check it out.

You should definitely check out Silent Hill (PS) & Silent Hill 2 (PS2). These games have been nightmare fodder for me for years! I do agree that a certain magic has been lost with "scary" games as of late.

Dead SPace does a good job building atmosphere for the first hour or so, then it just descends into typical monster shooting. Fatal Fram and It's sequel still creep me right the hell out, and So do the first 3 Silent hill games. F.E.A.R. Gives it an admirable try, but I think it fell a little flat.

Fatal Frame is the only series that actually was able to scare the shit out of me. Most games nowadays seem to go for either shock or startle factor, but Fatal Frame had a really dark and scary environment as well.

Try the penumbra series :)

The last games that I can remember being scary were Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame 2. They weren't "in your face" scary like a lot of games (Dead Space, etc.) are trying to be today, they just introduced horror subtly through atmosphere.

The most accurate answer is that you probably grew up.

b.b.b.bbut what happens if we were never scared of video games or movies after we hit teenage years? Should I blame my parents on feeding me a steady diet of horror movies, literature starting at the age of three?

I never finished this game, it freaked me out:

Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh

You can categorize horror games into 3 broad categories

  1. Suspense. This is where your Amnesia, Fatal Frame, etc... go

  2. Survival. This is where Resident Evil (Except R.E 5), STALKER and Silent Hill go. They're more focused on staying alive but still involve combat as a core mechanic.

  3. Kill everything that moves. This is your Doom 3, F.E.A.R, Dead Space etc...

Trying to mix the sections doesn't always turn out so well

The last game that scared me (not even sure if scared is the right word) was Fallout 3. It's not so much of a jump out of your seat and shit your pants scary but I'll never forget that feeling of dread, depression, and emptiness I felt when i first walked out of the Vault in the beginning of the game.

Try playing those games when you're sleep deprived.

I didn't think Amnesia was all that scary, I laughed and enjoyed running from the monster. I thought it was more scooby-doo if anything.

Did you try it late at night, alone, with lights off and with headphones?

What was so scary about it?

I don't get jumpy so whenever something "exciting" happened and popped out I stayed calm and got out of the way.

Game seemed more like tinderbox collector more than anything else.

Fatal Frame and Silent Hill come to mind. I found Dead Space 2 disturbing at times, but not particularly scary (it had its moments). F.E.A.R. had its moments of creepiness.

When was "scary" a common thing for games to be? Games have never been scary.
