HDMI makes it easy. You need a DVI->HDMI cord that matches your monitor. Unless your monitor is just exactly bitchin' enough, you also need an audio line. The original cord should work, but you need an RCA->headphone jack adapter for most computer sound systems.

If you're not setup with HDMI hardware, seanspen0 has a link for the right sort of cable that will run with old-school monitors.

Yup. Exactly what I did. Then I sold my Xbox and got a ps3. Monitor wasn't HDCP. Bought new monitor with HDMI port. Now I'm winning :)

If you don't have a monitor with HDMI then you will need one of these cables to use VGA. Then the audio will depend on the speaker setup

Do you know if they make one of those cables that isn't Microsoft brand? It would probably be exponentially cheaper.

I found this, it's really cheap but I'm not sure about quality (though afterall, it's a fairly low risk price for a cable).

Just bought this cable a few days ago, tiny bit of ghosting due to no shielding, but aside from that it gets the job done great.

I bought one of these Xbox VGA adapters a few months ago, and it works like a champ.
If you get one of these RCA to Stereo adapters, you can run the sound into your computer's sound-in port and play your game sounds through your computer speakers.

They do make one, although I can't remember who exactly it is. I think it's $20.

Newegg has one, though it has only mediocre reviews

The cheapo brands are fairly poor quality from what I've seen. I know someone who got one off Ebay for about $10-$15 but it was so bad you couldn't play game using it, he ended up buying a MS cable.

$7 http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10830&cs_id=1083005&p_id=4010&seq=1&format=2

The one I got had some ghosting issues but it might just be from a bad batch.

I bought mine for 0.01$ (plus 10$ on shipping) on ebay 3 years ago, still works flawlessly.

You need a computer monitor with hdmi inputs and a speaker system.

That's not true. Before I got a monitor with hdmi input I used one of these (which came with the console so i really find this whole thread a bit confusing).

If all you have for inputs on your monitor is VGA/DVI, then your only choice would be to use a 360 VGA cable and output the audio via the RCA red/white left/right audio cables into your sound system.

Just make sure you've got some extra RCA audio couplers and cables. The audio outputs on the 360 VGA cable are very short and unless your audio inputs are right next to your VGA input on your monitor (like, 4-6 inches away at most), you'll need an additional length of red/white RCA audio cable and an RCA coupler.

I've often hooked my xbox up to the second input on my monitor, and then just run the sound into the line in on my PC. I can switch between xbox and pc just by pressing the input button on my monitor that way, works pretty well.

Yes, with the HDMI cord to my HPLP2475W

yeah. all you need to do is buy a vga cable(1st party brand) and an optical cable to connect your sound system. This is the easiest way to do it. There are other ways too but this is the most cost effective.

This is how I have mine set up and it works great, using the VGA in on my Samsung screen and optical cable to my Yamaha receiver.

Yep, did it with an HDMI to DVI adapter for video and RCA to 3.5mm adapter for audio.

i've tried, the monitor and xbox don't seem to cooperate.

Instead of using a monitor as a TV I use a TV as a monitor. Works great.

dunno why everyone is making this sound so hard with special cables etc.

i have a 6 year old 22" HP HD monitor, an hdmi cable & my xbox. and run my xbox through my speaker system, works fine & didn't need anything i didn't already have.

and then i bought a 40" HD tv,so even better,lol

[–]Robotochan 0 points1 point ago

Because not every monitor has HDMI. So you need a "special" cable to hook it up.

And for sound systems, not every one uses the same set up. Again, if you want to use a 5.1 optical connection, or 3.5mm jack... there are different strokes for different folks.

All you really need, as far as the computer monitor goes, is a computer monitor with HDMI input. Like mine.

Now, you can be tricky and hook it up to a receiver so you can set up surround sound.. or you can be a cheap fuck like me and get a monitor that has speakers built in and a headphone jack. Then... you plug a decent set up speakers into the headphone jack of your monitor and voila.

i use the vga cable because i have one of the arcade versions without the hdmi port

If you have a newer HDMI xbox 360, you will need one of these things:

  1. A monitor with HDMI input.
  2. An HDMI to DVI adapter if your monitor only allows DVI.
  3. The VGA connector that Seanspen0 posted.

Word of warning with the VGA hookup, when I used that hookup it only allowed 720p as the max resolution. The video was still good with the VGA hookup at 720p, but when I finally upgraded to 1080 I won't go back.

As for the sound system: The VGA adapter only allows a single audio jack (headphone plug). Most surround sound systems allow for that hookup, but I don't know how good the surround sound actually works though. Aside from that, I think the usual audio jacks will work with most surround sound systems.

I use Microsoft's VGA adapter and it goes to 1080p on my 1920x1200 monitor.

For sound I use http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Console-Adapter-Convert-Single-Pc/dp/B0006U3ACY but for some reason it seems impossible to get cheaply (should be just a couple bucks).

I should have gotten something like that. I spent about $50 on a microsoft brand adapter because I was extremely impatient.
