Anyone noticed they've completely abandoned everything about "The Pattern"? (self.fringe)
submitted 1 year ago by aescnt
In season 1, they've mentioned that the reason for all fringe events were "the pattern." I haven't heard anything from it since. What gives?
[–]xauriel 33 points34 points35 points 1 year ago
They only called it that because they had no freaking clue what was going on.
[–]Syncblock 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago
Didn't they figure it out as cracks in the universe as caused by Walter?
[–]AS1LV3RN1NJA 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago
Hence why they don't call it the pattern anymore.

But The Pattern has such a good ring to it!
[–]frid 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
They didn't abandon it, they figured out what it was.

Anyone else notice that all the Events in 'The Pattern' were about creating a door between two universes, and centered on Walter's initial attempt, and David Robert Jones' replication of that event?

My belief is that our ZFT was Bell's attempt to prepare the Blue Universe to fight back against the Red Universe. The Pattern was a series of events loosely tied to Bell, ZFT, or Fringe Science.
Here's an something I posted in an earlier thread:
In 6B (S3.E14), they mention the amber from S1.E3, The Ghost Network (the one with the bus). ZFT was preparing for a war between our universe and the "Red" Universe, and it is proposed in 6B that the bus amber might have been an experiment to test ZFT's version of amber to stop up cracks on our side. If William Bell was indeed the founder of the ZFT organization on our side, he may have started it after seeing Walternate's efforts to militarize the Red Universe against our own. I think ZFT was Bell's way of equipping an organization on our side with tech he had access to over there. We saw in Subject 13 (S3.E15) that Walternate realized there was an alternate universe. Presumably, that epiphany acted as a catalyst for Walternate to begin plans to take his Peter back and sets the wheels in motion for a war between the two universes. When Bell is "over there," he sees Walternate's determination on destroying our universe and starts funneling information over to ZFT on our side so we could fight back.
When Mitchell Loeb is interrogated by Olivia about ZFT in Bound (S1.E11), he says:
MITCHELL LOEB: Yes! Do you not understand the rules? What we're up against? Who the two sides are? Tell me at least you know that. OLIVIA: Who's we? MITCHELL LOEB: We had a plan here, lady. We had a shot. And you just blew it. OLIVIA: Then why did you kidnap me? MITCHELL LOEB: Kidnap you? Idiot. We saved you. OLIVIA: Saved me from what? MITCHELL LOEB: We were going to let you go. We saved you. You-- you have no idea --- what you've done. Not a clue
TL;DR: ZFT was Bell's attempt to get ready for a war against the Red Universe

Yeah, and whatever happened with ZFT?

Didn't Walternate write it?
Edit: Yep, he did.

I thought Walter wrote the ZFT and just forgot about it, one of the things lost in his memory gaps. I don't think they ever concretely say if it was Bell or Walter who wrote it, but Bell was definitely funding it. I just thought that Walter wrote it, since Walternate wrote the one on the other side.

Yep, I think it's Walter- remember when he compares the funky 'y' in the manuscript to the one on his own typewriter?
[–]verbaltaku 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Didn't Bell write our side's ZFT? I remember when he said the funky "y" was from Bell's typewriter, although I guess that doesn't mean that Bell wrote it.
I vaguely remember Walter looking for a long lost chapter of ethics, and when he found it, The Observer was there.

I believe he meant the "organization" who kidnapped Olive. IMO it was just that german dude in the Wissenschaft prison.

I was under the impression that The Pattern was a sign of the weak spots between the two universes, since the amber bus was considered part of The Pattern. Unexplainable events that occur because the laws of science and nature are violated, I think it was something Walter realized in the episode with the "ghosts."

I've asked myself a month or two ago. However "the pattern" were inexplicable things happening, which turns out to be deeds of of mostly scientists, ZFT or not. What I didn't get was how did these events all align themselves to the origin of the crack that Walter made. :\

They never totally explained just what the pattern was, as there's a lot of room for interpretation, but it ultimately served its purpose. The Pattern could have been nothing more than the sum of ZFT's planning for the "war" or it could have been the Other side, or a combination of both.
Regardless, the point of The Pattern was to lead to Olivia joining and putting together her Fringe team, which would lead to the revelation of there being many universes and the "war".
It's a little frustrating, but you have to keep in mind that like Lost, this isn't hard scifi or even conventional scifi in the sense everything will have a definite or finite explanation. At this point it just isn't very important, because the plot of the series is able to move on without that detail being explained.
