I think I've solved your problem. I created a custom Google News section using the names of the EU member states as keywords. It seems to be working pretty well:

EU Countries

You can add it to your Google News frontpage or add the feed to your feed reader of choice.

I can recommend European Voice. Sadly, not all articles are available in full, but in general, it is a good resource. Probably one of the only purely European news sources out there. It is part of The Economist group. Hope you enjoy it.

EurActiv is the one I like the most, political news in ten languages. Note that each language is actually a separate magazine (although they all cover Europe), so put as many as you can understand in your RSS reader.

EuroTopics is an EU-wide press review. They provide an English summary of each article.

As mentioned above, EuroNews is a TV channel, it doesn't go very deep but it's good for real-time coverage.

You might also want to subscribe to EuroZine. It's a cultural magazine, and while I find most of their articles to be boring high-brow disquisitions about nebulous humanities circle-jerks, about once a week I do find some real gems in there.

It probably depends on what languages you speak where its best to get European news. My two favorite "English language" websites in regards to European news are The Guardian and Der Spiegel. Der Spiegel is of course a German language magazine but the website has a pretty substantial English language section. Here are the European sections of both websites:

You can also see that Der Spiegel has a list of European partners on its website that could be worthwhile checking out. You could also check out the List of non-English newspapers with English language subsections on Wikipedia.

The European media is in my experience a spectrum of neighbouring countries and countries who speak related languages reporting about each other so I wouldn't be surprised if you were getting better coverage about events in Italy and Spain from the French media than you would get from the German or the British media.

I also think that Western Europe is also a bit of a bubble when it comes to reporting about Europe as a whole. I hardly see any news from Eastern European countries in Western European media. The Germans talk about the "Mauer im Kopf" (The wall in the head) when it comes to the differences between East Germans and West Germans after reunification. Perhaps there is also a similar "Iron Curtain in the head" when it comes to East Europeans and West Europeans today.

Ironically I get a lot of my 'major' Euro news from Al-Jazeera.

After that it's all local or regional.

You could try the Guardian Weekly, it is not free, you have to pay for a subscription but the paper and digital editions include choice articles from le Monde, Washington Post and The Observer amongst others. It's a weekly distillation of news that I've found to be highly relevant and they do a good job of covering the world (although there is a UK section, of course). You can get a month for free to try it out too.
