I'm a strong advocate of Windows Media Center, so I'm gonna show you a bunch of stuff you can do if you go that route. I'll use videos/pics where I can, so you get a sense of the interface and ease of use.

Get an ATSC TV tuner and an antenna and you got yourself some free basic network HDTV. And not compressed like it is on cable. See here for what channels you can get and here for what antenna to buy. You can then use Windows Media Center to watch and record you TV, watch your Netflix or even watch Hulu. And a plugin like SeconRun.tv will allow you to take content from Netflix, Hulu and anywhere else on the web to create a second TV guide full of internet content. You can tell it to play random episodes of whatever shows you put in so that you don't have to know specificlly what you want to watch, you can just 'see whats on' like most people do with cable. You can also rent movies on demand like you would from your cable's STB with the CinemaNow plugin included in Windows Media Center. Now there probably still will be shows you can't get with all these options, such as HBO or the like. If you decide to pirate these (I'm not your mother) you can throw them on your HTPC and view them from the video library.

This covers mostly just the 'TV' features of Windows Media Center. You also have all the aspects of any HTPC such as adding your dvd/music/photo collection to it, as well as internet sites, plugins, ect. all from a remote or mouse and keyboard within the Media Center interface. If you decide not to go the OTA TV route, then something like XBMC is what you will want.

Inside a reddit right under the title is a save button/link. Or if in alien blue, just press and hold the reddit and click the star on the menu that comes up

I believe you need the RES plugin for that.

I'm not at a computer but I'll take a screen shot when I am. No plug ins required.

Cut the cord over a year ago. The only thing I can't find legally is sports although NBC has been broadcasting games lately.

It's tougher if you live in an area that cannot receive OTA channels.

Get an Apple TV, jailbreak it, run a Plex server, download what you want to watch.

No commercials, ATV2 = $100, only watch good stuff.

I'll probably be getting a Revo AR3700 and putting XBMC on it. I like the idea of having a fully functional Windows PC on top of a media center.

I don't know about that . My friend and I both bought 3700s hoping the same and found it woefully underpowered. Totally unable to handle 1080p, no matter what the specs say

I wouldn't be throwing any 1080p at it. At most, it'd be playing 720p video.

Don't paint yourself into a corner with an already obsolete HTPC. You may want to watch 1080p video sooner than you'd think.

I use a 1st gen Intel Macbook Pro with Plex. Even though it's a few years old it handles 1080p just fine.

Here's the thing - The Cheap/Low Power HTPC machines are relying on hardware assisted video decoding, because they have a fairly weak CPU.

This might be fine on day 1, when you are just watching flash video, but next year when a new codec comes out, or people start switching to WebM/HTML5, your appliance may not support those formats.

If you get something with a good CPU, you will be able to play any format.

Also, with CPU power, you can do things like run emulators for arcade and console games.

Heck, you might want to play a current PC game on it.

It would work better under linux, I have a revo 1600, under linux it runs 1080p perfectly, under windows it can't even do 720p.

I would still look around. 720p will tax the machine too.

DTV are jackasses. When I called to cancel, they required me to send in the receivers that I bought from best buy, or they were going to charge me for them. I paid $200 for a HD DVR, they said that even though I bought it, I still had to send them another $200 if I wanted to keep the fucking receiver even without any service.

[–]FrankReynolds 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, they are kind of scumbags. My receiver was going slow as shit and I wanted one of their new models about four months ago. I called and they told me that I would have to pay $599 for it. But, since I pay $6.00/month for the insurance on my HD-DVR, I purposely broke it and had them come replace it with a brand new one. For free. Since you know, that makes sense.

I'm just glad my two year contract was up. No hoops to jump through at all. Though I did get passed off to about 28 different people offering me X Y Z to stay.

Has anyone checked the http://www.ourpromisetoyou.com site to get the story from DIRECTV? Fox is asking for a crazy increase and I'm glad they are standing up to them!

[–]FrankReynolds 0 points1 point ago

Yeah the whole debacle is Fox's fault for wanting a ludicrous pay bump. I know that.

I guess my point was that I don't want to deal with any of these providers anymore. It quite simply isn't worth the hassle.

Fox News, Fox broadcast network not at risk for now

Damn I was hoping they were gonna drop Fox News.
