Have any of you guys had to use your Jiu Jitsu outside of the mats? (self.bjj)
submitted 3 months ago* by jimjambamslam
Ever have to use it in a street altercation or anything like that? EDIT: Wow guys thanks for the awesome response, feel free to tell more jiu jitsu stories in this thread, I think most people will enjoy & appreciate them.

4 years ago: drunk friend of a friend at a party was out of line... 1 minute fight. He tackled me down, I grabbed an arm, went for arm bar from guard, transitioned to the triangle. tap tap tap. I left the party shortly afterwards. Apparently he was depressed and pissed for the rest of the night, he also thought i choked him with my arms (rnc probably). Every time i've seen him since then, he gives me mad props and talks about his respect for jitsu and wanting to learn some (he's more of a gym rat). Besides that one time, i've attempted to use bjj dozens of times against my girlfriend- but she is mastered the "grab balls and twist defense", which when complimented by her tickle defense, is unstoppable.

I fought a crack dealer with a claw hammer. He was trying to hit my head, but i closed in and got to T-position. His hammer was useless then. Then I did the basic sit back take down and did some punches. His dropped the hammer to defend the punches. Cranked a straight armbar then ran away.
[–]Nefilim777 13 points14 points15 points 3 months ago
I'm amazed no one else has asked how you were in the situation of having to fight a crack dealer.
[–]paulwithapKron Gracie 19 points20 points21 points 3 months ago
He was obviously buying crack.
[–]LordTydus 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
I was talking to the dealer, not buying. He was pissed that I wouldn't buy crack from him. He was being aggressive about selling like a pan handler and I told him to F off. He blew his lid off and pulled out a hammer. I immediately closed the distance.

The scene: Atlantic City hotel room. A friend of a friend was having a party for his gf and had a huge room. It was right after my first ammy mma fight and I was broke as fuck. About six months earlier I had bought some ecstasy pills but had never eaten them, but since I was so broke in AC with a bunch of my friends I decided to eat 2 and give some to my friends. After partying and having a good time for a while we end up back in the room. As my buddy and I are mellowing out and coming down, a fight breaks out because some douchebag freshly 21 year old kid starts bugging out saying that someone stole his Adderol. For some reason he calls out the guy whose throwing the whole shindig and pushes him back in his chair. After a brief moment I realise that no one else is going to do anything about the situation, so I jump on this ogres back and start cranking an rnc but he starts hulking out so I buck and land in mount. Now he's throwing punches from the bottom, I scoop an arm and roll off for an arm bar. As this dude starts standing up I underhook his leg and crank the arm bar just enough to let him know whats up. I'm pretty sure I said the most corny thing of my life at that point: "This is my arm now" while I'm hanging upside down from this kid's neck.
tl/dr; armbarred some douchebag while I was rolling on e... I was rolling while I was rolling
[–]quicknoteRoger Gracie 6 points7 points8 points 3 months ago

[–]casiopiaaSideco Honorio> Fepa> Godoi 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I didn't break it, just locked it up pretty tight. He didn't really know to tap which is what prompted my corny one liner.

I bounced for a little extra in December of 2010. Something like 9 nights total, so nothing significant. If you knew how small I was, you would know why me being a bouncer is pretty ridiculous. When I showed up (one of the cops that I trained recommended me and got me the gig because I needed some extra cash), the manager looked at me and was like, "are you for real?"
I just shrugged. So they made me dress up and check IDs at the VIP door. My third night, a very large man was resisting three bouncers and two police, and they yelled for me. So I figure foured his arm and held it in a kimura position. And that it was it. It really dumb.
In general, I find that the more I train the less likely I am to get involved in a fight, and I prefer it that. It's far too easy for some nut ball to whip out a weapon.

[–]ZenphobiaSonny Achille - Pedro Sauer Black Belt 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago

Tiny is all relative of course (I wouldn't say I'm the tiniest person to ever have done jiu-jitsu), but every other bounce working there was at least 220 lbs.
[–]notformeplz 10 points11 points12 points 3 months ago
I'm not trying to be an ass, but too many people think an armbar is going to stop someone.
I've seen at least one normal person continue to fight even with a DESTROYED arm. Choke your opponents and DON'T let go when they tap, let go when they are out.
Seriously. All it takes is for one guy to tap, you to let go and him to pull out a sharp stick/rock and kill you.
[–]Hesperus 8 points9 points10 points 3 months ago
Rolling kneebars: when you absolutely, positively, have to disable every last motherfucker in the room.
[–]ManicParroT 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Choking someone out also looks a lot better when you have to explain yourself later on, as may well be the case. If your opponent's walking around with a fractured ulna that looks a lot worse for you than if he just want to sleep for a moment or two.
[–]PimpDawg -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
I don't think so. Strangling someone could be attempted murder by the wrong donut-eater. Tearing their knee ligaments is I think a good approach. Plus, that guy will remember you for the next 9-12 months.

Yes, but those stories aren't awesome. This last December I was walking down an icy hill, hit an especially wet spot and flipped on my back like Charlie Brown trying to kick a football. A textbook breakfall ensued, no damage taken.
[–]PimpDawg 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Holy crap I had one of these a few years ago. The back of my head was inches from a concrete step. Due to proper ukemi, my chin was tucked in preventing traumatic brain injury.
[–]akharon 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Yeah. I told this on an askreddit a month or so ago. These things usually turn into guys trying to tell war stories, when in my experience, sans weapons and groups, BJJ is going to do exactly what you'd think it would. I prefer to concentrate on the non-obvious stuff that is a bit more positive than "so this brosef was at the bar and wouldn't stop hitting on my woman, so I shot a double, got mount, and gave him some of those Tanner Elbows that Tito Ortiz was always hollerin about. Gotta keep that street cred up, nah mean?"
I mean, really, think back to your first day of BJJ, or the first time you rolled with a purple or higher. If you didn't get the picture that the only reason you walked out of that gym in one piece was because he permitted it, something was wrong. Not because they should beat the tar out of you, but just simply it's an eye opening experience when you first realize you don't know a damn thing about fighting. Everyone that has a year or more of experience should have the ability to take care of themselves in a situation, and more importantly, get out of it ASAP.
[–]Israfel 8 points9 points10 points 3 months ago
I rear naked choked a guy in a parking lot once. Unfortunately, it was an event that could have been avoided, but from a tactical standpoint a bit of grappling goes a long way against non-grapplers.
[–]jmachnikMarcelo Garcia 7 points8 points9 points 3 months ago
This year: I live in New York and on the way back from the bar (my sober friend was driving) we saw a guy beating up on a woman in the street. We stop the car and I get out and grab him by the collar. We get her in the car but this guy is still struggling with me going on about how this is his "babies-momma" and she's leaving him, I wonder why? I guess he had beat up on her pretty bad smashed a phone on her head etc. He keeps coming forward so I try to sweep him (osoto gari) but it just kind of stumbles him and he goes away. We take her to the train station and the poor girl is hysterical. As I'm walking up the platform steps I see the guy coming at me, he's followed us here. This time he goes straight for me, hands around my neck trying to push me down the stairs....arm drag to the back, sink the rear naked. I've learned to always tuck my head now, because he stuck his thumb right in my eye. But aside from that, a few seconds later, he's asleep flat on his face. Cops came and he went to jail. The real kicker is that as the police were retelling the story to one another, they called me a Karate master ...*facepalm. Also, about a week later, as I was driving, I saw the same girl and him walking hand in hand down the street....

Had a few of those myself. Everyone thinks because I am about 5'6 and 150 lbs that they can take me when I start shooting the shit with this dude I know that use to do BJJ, once they hear, I swear it's like everyone has something to prove. And of course in my drunken state and me being a cocky 20 year old, the first thing out of my mouth is always 'Well, if you think you're so tough, lets have a go!' Haven't met one guy yet that actually knows what he is doing.

A fellow redditor showed me how to do a RNC before I'd started BJJ. Literally used it to pull a guy off my roommate at a bar about 2 weeks later. I had a back injury at the time but the second I was good to go I started hitting the mats. That was back in October, haven't looked back.
[–]Newo923 Stripes - Royler Gracie 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
First year at university. I like to think I avoid physical altercations well but on one occasion some guy was just being a drunk retard and came at me with his arm straight out for a rape choke, and had I been in a better mood I suppose I could've played it off like I didn't care but I immediately threw it to the side, threw my arm around his head and dropped a guillotine. I admittedly had lost my temper and he probably didn't know what was going on until his face went near purple and I let go.
Unfortunately there's been another incident with a guy who for whatever reason decided he should try to AMOG me in front of a girl he liked by going for a faux double leg on me. I decided to play along, except I slapped on a guillotine again and when I let go and laughed it off he was mad because he was just "joking" and I was actually choking him, so when he came forward again he got a real crank put on his neck and ended up tapping furiously as one of his frat buddies (guy from former story) laughed at him for being an idiot.
Worst part is they both live on my floor. We all get along now but it wasn't worth the hassle.
[–]antap 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago

This is entertaining. I've often wondered how many of us are in the pickup community as well. About half of the PUAs I hang out with train in BJJ, Krav, or both. I have the feeling there's quite a bit of overlap.

Back before I ever touched a mat, my friends and I would watch the UFC and practice the ground game that we saw. Looking back, we were so nontechnical, but whatever. After a few months of that, my drunk brother comes home and starts causing problems. I try to take him to bed but he turns on me. He pushes me and I don't know what came over me, but little 140lb 16 year old me gets out of the way and wraps 22 year old 180lb him up and just kinda fall with him, mount, and hold him for a while. It would have been so easy to drops some hammerfists. Before then I always thought "HA yeah BJJ, pretty cool to play with with my friends" but after I realized just how effective it is, and soon started actual training.
[–]Iforgetusername 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
yeah a few times, most recent though...
Really strong guy and a ex golden gloves boxer friend of mine is really drunk and his gf and him start fighting near their truck... He's insisting he's driving because he's mad at his gf over some fight they're having. A third friend tries to intervene to just tell him to jump in another car let her drive home the truck when he squares up with him and I know he'll kill the guy if he really connects. So I sorta stepped in, tried to reason, he kept acting hard, see him set up a sloppy punch at me and I sorta clinch/pin him against car take a weak shot or two eventually turn him , rnc him.
This is all with one arm basically because I was like 2 weeks out of a surgery for partial tear of pec. and am using the arm that has the rnc in grabbing my own shoulder of jacket while slamming knee into his back. Was still agony.
He apologized the next day in person and it took everything not to punch him in the face.

I choked a co-worker unconscious. Twice.
It wasn't really justified, though.

[–]GlaealMarcelo Motta/Carlos Santos 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
He's was a douche, he found out I did BJJ and he started jokingly throwing punches at me to see if I'd flinch.
I waited until he had his hands in his pockets and jumped on his back and choked him unconscious. Let him slowly drop to the floor face first and wake up, then choked him out again.
We're cool now.

I don't know if this counts but I used to work as a bouncer in local nightclub (in two clubs actually) for five years. Most situations I could handle with sweet-talking and staying calm. But on few occasions things were already out of control when I arrived at the scene (I should mention that our club was three-story building so keeping it calm wasn't always the easiest task).
RNC was my number one technique. Easy to execute, efficient, good for protecting yourself and fast. Though, I always tried to avoid choking clients unconscious as RNC is potentially brain damaging and lethal technique. Usually someone just wanted to punch my face for no clear reason->duck under, take back, seatbelt/RNC. During that five year period not once was I charged or had any problems with the police. And after first two-three years I really didn't have to choke or use my other jj-skills at work. I guess the sweet-talking thing was better for moneymaking and safer to use. For both of us. Unconscious customer gives lousy tip..
First "fight" ever: I went to wake up a sleeping man upstairs. He's alone sleeping at his table. He was about 6"0, 200lbs and maybe in his mid-thirties. Not terribly dangerous looking.
*Me: "Hey buddy, how you doing? I work here as a bouncer and saw you sleeping here. You know, you really should go home and get some rest. Come back tomorrow, what you say?" *
Mr. X: "What the fuck are you talking midget?"
sidenote: I'm 5"9 and about 170lbs so really not that big guy
Me: "Okay, take it easy fella, I'm not here to hurt you just doing my job"
Mr. X: "Fuck you! You fucking midget! I'm gonna fuck you up!"
Me: "Calm down man! We don't want any trouble but you really have to leave now"
Mr. X: "Fuck you! Who's gonna make me leave? You? I'll knock you out in a second"
Me: "Calm down man. I'm not gonna hurt you. But you will leave now"
The guy stands up and I back off a bit, check my surroundings and prepare for battle.
Mr. X: "I'm gonna teach you a lesson"
He swings couple of overhands at me, I dodge and instinctively duck under his armpit behind him, jump a bit so that I can reach his neck and then put him on sleep with RNC. Immediately as he goes limp I release the choke and try to gently lower him on the floor. On the floor he wakes up and tries to get up, but since I still got him under pressure and choke-ready he can't get up (I'm in squatting-position behind him and he is sitting).
Me: "Calm down. I won't hurt you. I work here and you were misbehaving. Now you have to leave."
Mr. X: "Okay okay! Whatever! I'm cool!
And then I do the most stupid thing ever. I believe him and let him stand up. He springs back up and starts swinging at me furiously. First few shots land on my head and I start to lose balance. But luckily he doesn't knock me out and I gain my balance and again go on his back choking him unconscious. Then my coworker shows up to my aid and we escort the fellow outside. Mr. X is later referred as Sleeping Bear at out club (we had this little record book where all the fights were marked in case of repercussions).
The whole thing lasted maybe 90 seconds but it felt like forever. A good lesson overall.
[–]sidevotesareupvotes 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
What would you do if they spiked you on your head either accidentally or purposefully while standing up? See Carlos Newton vs Matt Hughes
[–]BMWNN 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
You mean when I'm on their back? I'm not really on their back. I'm standing up behind him. Sometimes you just have to jump a bit to get the initial down-going momentum. After getting the neck somewhat in control, I pull backwards and press down so they'll have to sit down or get choked. It takes about a second or less.
Before all this happened I had trained self-defence other than bjj and judo. And I also used to work in the army as hand-to-hand fighting instructor (basic self-defence for soldiers).
I'll try to find a video later to show what I mean if this post isn't clarifying enough.
I understand your concern. It is of course a risk to be considered and should be avoided at all costs. Getting slammed on concrete floor would produce serious injury.
I see.

I haven't submitted anyone but even my simple knowledge of the basic positions helped me immensely in the couple of street fights i've been in. The most notable would be me getting jumped in this super narrow hallway, about 6 or 7 guys tried to bumrush me at the same time but bottlenecked in the hallway. The first guy knocked me off balance so I pulled guard on him and used my left arm to control his head and stuck my right thumb in his eye and rolled it around. He screamed like a dying rabbit and I pushed him off of me and another guy fell in his place, I started going for his eyes too and he immediately got up and walked off, I rolled to my feet and ran like hell. I escaped with only eating a few punches and kicks to the head, which i was mostly able to parry with my/my opponents body in my guard.
Did not expect d3adly eye gouge technique dragon claw from BJJ. Hilarious and make note.
i'd say there is probably a bigger difference between mma and a streetfight than mma and bjj. sometimes people forget that although mma has less rules, when someone does break them, it really changes things

I was filming outside a supermarket for my documentary class using a $3,000 camera the school lent to its students. A drunk guy came up and threatened to kill me because I guess he didn't like to be filmed.
He grabbed me in a headlock, so I passed the camera to my friend, wrestled out, did a hip toss and climbed into mount, where I grabbed him into an ezekiel choke. He started scratching me so I popped him in the nose and ran away.
[–]falloutzwei 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
I did once at work. Had a patient with hypoglycemia who was running around fighting people, I basically knocked him down when he got in my face. Then I gained mount and kept him entertained so someone else could administer a sedative. He ended up in the ICU (because of the sedative, not me) so I became the "guy who put his patient in the ICU." I had only trained for two months at the time, so at least against the un-trained, willingness means more than technique.

About an hour ago actually, not very badass, but im glad i knew bjj
Went to a party with my sister, small one and only girls there, one of them was really angry for some reason and very verbally abusive. About 30 min after i arrive she goes completely crazy screams at everyone and starts punching walls, I come over and try to calm the situation by placing myself between her and the other girls as she is trying to push them and screams at them. She ends up punching one of the girls and I manage to separate them. Eventually she's threatening all sorts of harm to herself and others and I end up taking her back and holding her down until the police arrives (At which time they thought I was trying to kill her or something and went for me)
Not exactly impressive to be able to hold down a 140lbs girl, but I think the situation would've gotten really ugly if i hadn't been there, and made it easy to keep calm knowing what I was doing (although i probably took too long deciding to take her out, didn't really know many pll there so it was kinda weird taking point on the situation )

Went on a vacation with a bunch of friends and a few people I didnt know. One of the guys I didnt know was really into UFC and we chatted about it. He found out I did BJJ and kept making comments about wanting to spar. Anyhow he got hammered and came into one of the hotel rooms we had rented that I happened to be sleeping in and attacked me in my sleep. elbow escaped, pulled guard and arm-barred him until he said he gave up which was a few degrees after I heard a loud pop. spent the rest of the trip rubbing his elbow and sulking.

another doorguy/bouncer...
It's funny because when I first started bouncing i was like 19, had been in a few fights, thought I was awesome, until I had to start dealing with people way bigger than me, even at my height 6'6" I was pretty lanky, so most people I tied up with were way stronger. like huge steroidal guidos and such...
I've used so many techniques but the basics have gone along way for me... RNC, Short Choke, Anaconda Choke, Arm Drags, and knee on belly position etc. etc.
Ironic in a way when I first started working there i didn't know anything other than a few basic things, but one of the guys who worked at the club I had gotten the job at was a 1st degree black belt (at the time, now 3rd degree) who was actually the one who got me into training...
Outside of work I've only had to use it once or twice... Most fights I've ever been in outside of work have been huge fights were you definitely don't want to be on the ground for too long.
