I almost went to protest them when they came to UMASS Boston. Then I did a little bit of research and decided not to go. I'll tell you what I found:

They are trying to make money. They go to areas where they will create the most rage. They protested gays outside a UMASS AIDS fundraiser with signs that say 'God Hates Fags'. They go to the funerals of military members with signs that say 'Thank God For Dead Soldiers". They spew a bunch of hateful bullshit, and wait for somebody to assault them. Once hands are laid on, they sue. They literally have lawyers on standby and have done this multiple times. This is how the family earns it's income. This is the purpose of the entire church. And it's tax-free.

It's better to just ignore them. Don't even attract attention to or near them. You might solicit the aid of some testosterone crazed idiot who is just looking for a fight, and who will attack them and get sued.

I think that the most despicable thing that is happening here is the fact that they do not pay taxes. Yet they consistently have police escorts, and probably take advantage of many more tax-paid services that I can not even think about right now.

This isn't just a problem with the WBC. It's a problem with all religion in any country where they are exempt from taxes. I think if you looked at it, religious organizations probably earn more in a year through tithes and donations than many small businesses, do and take up much more of our taxes and most importantly, our land.

A few of them actually are lawyers. Have you seen the Louis Theroux documentary on them? Check it out, it's about an hour and it's fascinating.

Interesting, you know this really validates my opinion that the phelps are just victims of Fred Phelps. I truly feel sorry for them, the only person I could even come close to hating is Fred Phelps, and Shirley. I was honestly a little angry when some cowardly piece of shit threw the drink at the kid. And at the end when Louis was talking alone with the oldest girl, you almost saw a crack in the armor of her religious indoctrination...

so sad :(

Or, if you're going to go and counter-protest, do it to demonstrate that they're just running a con and trying to lure people and organizations (local police, municipalities, etc.) into being sued.

Carry signs that say something like "WBC doesn't care about fags or god. They're just looking for someone to sue."

[–]Captain_Midnight 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And prepare for them to sue you for defamation, slander and libel.

[–]Nougat 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And those suits would only win if what you say is false. I have to think it would be elementary for a defense lawyer to produce the WBC's legal history, which would certainly take the statement "WBC doesn't care about fags or god. They're just looking for someone to sue" out of the realm of slander and into the realm of arguably true commentary and free speech.

Also, IANAL, but --

Libel and slander are both forms of defamation. Libel is for published work, either print or broadcast, so what would apply here would be slander. However, apparently, free speech limits state law to some degree. The scope of constitutional protection extends to statements of opinion on matters of public concern that do not contain or imply a provable factual assertion.

[–]Captain_Midnight 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And those suits would only win if what you say is false.

The point is not to win. The point is to spend you into submission, at which point they offer you a settlement. Verdicts take time, and they can be appealed.

Libel and slander are both forms of defamation. Libel is for published work, either print or broadcast, so what would apply here would be slander.

You put your statements on a sign, it's libel. You write something on a piece of paper and present it to the public, you have technically published it. You reiterate those statements verbally -- which you would as a protester, since protesters by definition are not silent -- then it's slander. And you can be sued for defamation with or without the specifications of libel or slander.

However, apparently, free speech limits state law to some degree. The scope of constitutional protection extends to statements of opinion on matters of public concern that do not contain or imply a provable factual assertion.

Like I said, that doesn't really matter, because the WBC isn't looking for a court decision.

[–]daramel 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wear a mask then. Many of them do.

[–]Nougat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think writing a message on a sign qualifies as "publishing." It would be slander, not libel. Still, we're splitting hairs on that point.

Right, WBC wants a settlement, but their ability to press for a settlement hinges on what merit their suit has. I don't think a defamation suit in such a situation would have any merit. The group's past legal actions show that the statement is arguably true.

Another legal link: http://www.expertlaw.com/library/personal_injury/defamation.html

  1. A false and defamatory statement concerning another;
  2. The unprivileged publication of the statement to a third party (that is, somebody other than the person defamed by the statement);
  3. If the defamatory matter is of public concern, fault amounting at least to negligence on the part of the publisher; and
  4. Damage to the plaintiff.

One - the statement is arguably not false Two - this applies, in that third parties would witness the counter protest Three - I don't see where there would be negligence. Four - What damage? The only damage they could claim would be an infringement on their ability to execute their litigation con, which proves the statement true.

But that all applies to individuals, not groups, and not "public figures," which Phelps and the WBC most certainly are.

... where a public figure attempts to bring an action for defamation, the public figure must prove an additional element: That the statement was made with "actual malice". In translation, that means that the person making the statement knew the statement to be false, or issued the statement with reckless disregard as to its truth.

There's clearly no reckless disregard for the truth in the statement, "WBC doesn't care about fags or god. They're just looking for someone to sue."

[–]Captain_Midnight 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think writing a message on a sign qualifies as "publishing." It would be slander, not libel. Still, we're splitting hairs on that point.

Respectfully, a protest sign is in fact a published statement, once it appears in public. Slander only refers to verbal statements, not written statements. Libel only refers to written statements.

Right, WBC wants a settlement, but their ability to press for a settlement hinges on what merit their suit has. I don't think a defamation suit in such a situation would have any merit.

Now you're just speculating. The fact remains that this is their tactic, and it has been statistically successful for them.

Another legal link:

Like I said, the legal definitions aren't at issue for the WBC.

One - the statement is arguably not false Two - this applies, in that third parties would witness the counter protest Three - I don't see where there would be negligence. Four - What damage?

This also does not matter, because, as I have said repeatedly now, establishing these criteria is not the point of the suit.

where a public figure attempts to bring an action for defamation, the public figure must prove an additional element

I don't think you're getting what I'm saying here...

[–]Nougat 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Question - are you a lawyer? I've already said I'm not, but I'm coming up with some legal references to support what I'm saying. Am I speculating? Yes, and unless you're a lawyer, you're doing the same thing.

I get what you're saying, that WBC doesn't give a shit about whether their suit is viable or not. So the worst that could happen is you show up in court yourself, with some legal references in hand (if I can find them, they're easy to find), and I think odds are very high the judge would dismiss the case.

[–]omginternets 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, it's much harder for public figures to prove malice. They have to prove what's referred to as actual malice, which has a much more rigid scope.

A public figure is somebody who thrusts himself into the public sphere, and it's beyond a shadow of a doubt that WBC members are public figures.

This is pretty safe. Go for it.

[–]Blacksh33p 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you tack on an IMO you're safe. Can't sue someone for their opinion, 1st Amendment. They try to take it to court and that's malicious prosecution.

I completely agree that the best thing to do is to stay away from the WBC protest.

However, a couple of weeks ago icarus_in_space posted a clever idea that I think would be an acceptable second-best choice if one must protest. START A PLEDGE DRIVE.

The longer the WBC stay, the more money is raised for a cause they hate.

... and hold up a large board with a counter across the street from them saying "Today, WBC has helped donate $______ to prevent discrimination of the gay community in the Sacramento area". I would say that having a bunch of absurd protesters will make the likelihood of an alteration smaller, thus killing their business model.

I mean, if I saw a "God Hate Fags" beside a "God Hate Figs" sign, it would make it much harder to get angry.

[–]wesmwatson[S] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know, I have read about that as well. That's the sort of thing that this kind of protest nullifies; by acting like fools you paint them as the aggressors. Their protests are a flop and end up bolstering support for our side.

When they came to my hometown, the mayor and city council suggested that everyone ignore them. It worked so well that they left early, having next to no impact on everyone's day. Counter-protesting gives them the publicity they want and live off of. Take away their power, and you take away their reason for being there. If everyone did this, it might weaken them enough to make them stop.

the westboro baptist church will not assault anyone. They are one of the smartest protest groups in the US. they wait for you to assault them so they can prove their point. they have lawyers with them at all times. its a very rough issue when they come to your town. you get stuck between whether or not you should protest them or not. they want you to. so just make them irrelevant and ignore them.

The most successful way to discourage these ** is to completely ignore them. If no one paid them any attention, they would stay home and quietly hate the world.

Here's the thing though - they aren't just looking for publicity, they are looking for confrontation. You have two ways of shutting them up.

1) Ignore them. The problem with this is that YOU know to ignore them but everyone in your town may not. Some people out there who don't get on reddit (or any internet at all, for that matter) might still see it in the news and decide to give them an earful, which leads to shouting, which leads to...exactly what they want. If you do a -

2) Absurdity protest, you don't give them any confrontation - just laugh at their face - and you let everyone who might have otherwise gotten into a confrontation with them know just to laugh at them...nothing more. You point out their ridiculousness to everyone. Ignoring them doesn't do that.

Plus, #2 is fun.

[–]Yserbius 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. These guys are the real life version of 4chan trolls. They just want to see massive rage. I don't think they so much hate everyone as they do it for teh lulz. I mean, come on, if they did not have such a rhetoric how many people would have heard of them?

[–]Achalemoipas 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's better than ignoring, there's ridicule.

Here's what I'd do: I'd just follow them with an audience. You put bleachers in front of them, spotlights, everything, and then you have the people in the bleachers laugh and point at them. Add a few cartoonish sound effects to the thing.

I disagree with the advice to ignore. While I think it's perfectly okay to ignore them, what we have today with the WBC is the results of years and years of people taking the “ignore” approach. They are not going away. In fact, they’re stronger.

Doing this counter-protest is a great idea, and here's why:

Scenario 1: Mother drives a child past a WBC protest. Child sees sign “God Hates Jews.” Child asks mom about it. Mom tells the child the truth, that there are some people in the world who believe really wrong things. Child feels sad.

Scenario 2: Mother drives a child past a WBC protest. Child sees sign “God Hates Jews.” And then child sees another sign “This is My Sign!” Mom starts to explain about the WBC, and the Mom sees the counter protest, and offers an additional explanation, saying “Oh, look, there are some other people who are being silly on purpose to make the bad people look silly too!” Mom gets a chuckle out of it. Child laughs too. Child likes the silly people, because even a child sees that this is a clever way to make mean people look silly too. Child feels happy.

The mentality of our society is made up of one thing: messages. If a message of hate goes out and it is ignored, the message is still received. If a counter-message goes out, it becomes a far more powerful message, and overpowers the message of hate.

Now that I am reminded - people used to say that a good practical joke is to ram a potato or a banana up the exhaust pipe. Apparently, you can drive a short distance, and then the car stops.

Does anyone know whether it works? Inflicts damage to the car?

[–]maxxspeed 2 points3 points ago

If you wedge a potato into the exhaust it will prevent the car from starting. So yes, go buy some potatoes.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

With the meaning you intend, "a sign" (English) = « une pancarte » (French)

Besides, « signe » is a masculine noun in French, so it'd be « un signe. »

Hey I got an idea, how about you ignore these people and pretend like they don't exist that way they just go back to Texas and don't bother anyone with their idiocy?

This reminds me of when skin heads/KKK types protest and everyone comes out in an "anti protest" and screams and yells at them and gets all pissed off. If no one showed up or gave a shit about them showing up in the first place then they eventually would stop doing it.

tl;dr don't feed the trolls

[–]wesmwatson[S] 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Here's an interview with former KKK leader Johnny Lee Clary. In it he talks about how a black preacher (minister? I don't recall...) used absurdism to make a fool of him and completely diffuse his hatred. I'm not saying we should go yell at these folks and tell them they're wrong, I'm saying we should make stupid signs that don't increase tension but do show how ridiculous the WBBC people are. That does more than any argument, no matter how peaceful, and (I would wager) more than just doing nothing.

[–]ppcpunk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why even show up? The only reason they do this is to get a rise out of people. When tons of people show up then the news media pays attention to it and puts them on tv and people do interviews with them, they absolutely LOVE it. Ignoring them would pay your point in spades.

[–]wesmwatson[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know, that SF thing really damaged them. I think it's only when you get militant that you're feeding the trolls.

[–]ppcpunk 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How did it damage them? The only way these people lose is if no one pays attention to them. The way they win is when people do pay attention to them. The more eye balls you put on them and their crazy ways the more people see it and albeit very few people but more people "sign up" for their crazy ideas.

It's kind of like the saying "there is no such thing is bad publicity." It isn't as if normal sane people see them protesting while they drive by and think "Yeah now that I think about it god DOES hate fags." However there is a slight percentage of the population who does think like that and all you do is give them the means to advertise themselves to these people who exist in the population.

I don't think 'absurdist' means what you think it does... (i.e., absurdism is a philosophical position similar to existentialism and an absurdist is somebody that holds this position, not somebody that makes others look absurd)

[–]wesmwatson[S] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know what it means normally, but I saw it used in this context and liked it. Besides, in a way the folks who stage the counter-protest are doing things to show how little the WBBC's message matters, which is sort of in keeping with the spirit (or whatever you'd like to call it) of absurdism.

If you've got a better idea for what to call it, I'd be glad to hear it.

These guys won't be bullied or humiliated into going away. It's gonna take the only qualities they don't have to offer: Tolerance and love for all things. Go there and buy them a cup of coffee(better still, make it yourself), listen to their fears, talk to them like normal human beings.

In a perfect world, everyone would have enough love for everyone, and even Fred Phelps would've been loved into not creating this church.

Oh, and by the way; someone did try to do something about their picketing...

I like to think they are really smart trolls, who realized they could unite America by giving diverse groups a common enemy to unite against. If everyone agrees that they are assholes, maybe we'll stop bitching about all the other crap that we always do and try to get a few things done in this country. So intentional or not on their part (probably not - the are probably just assholes), I see the aftermath of their actions as positive.

That said, one day these people are going to go into the WRONG neighborhood and shit is going to turn real fast. Intellectuals in major cities can be pretty tolerant in the name of free speech, but take a sign that says "God hates America" to the wrong part of town and tolerance isn't the first thing on people's minds.

Yeah they protested at my high school too, so we organized a "counter-protest" which involved everyone wearing our school colors and stood across the street from them. But yeah we had to remember to tell everyone to be peaceful and stuff because everything is on camera.

I think that if you can stage some kind of counter-rally to spread awareness about just how ridiculous they are, that is good. What happens when one person who has no idea whats going on sees them and snaps? If there was a group of people there he could talk to (say, involved in a peaceful protest for human rights and equality) maybe he wouldn't make a bad decision....

Immediately after they arrive, come in with a bunch of caution tape and have people stand as "posts" around their group. Then wrap the caution tape around your "posts" so that it doesn't touch anyone in their group while you're making it. Then make signs that say, "CAUTION: TROLLS" and "CAUTION: MORONS" or something more creative.

Hold up to them that says "For every minute you protest we will donate $500 to a Pro-Gay group!" that way for every minute they protest they will be helping the gay cause, when they want the opposite.

[–]wesmwatson[S] 1 point2 points ago

Take it one step further than a counter protest or absurd counter protest.

Bring them cold bottles of water. Tell them politely that you support their right to free speech. Don't say you disagree or that they're stupid. That'll only serve to further their self image that the world is against them. They thrive on it.

They're in the process of destroying themselves anyway. You may as well help them along with a nice cool drink to soothe sore throats.

They aren't in it for the attention. They just want to piss off whoever is around so that they can sue. As more of their protests are foiled by absurd counter demonstrations, the attitude toward them will be to mock them. Instead of "I want to fucking kill them," you get "look at those idiots."
