All cool decisions except for one: Film school. SUCH A WASTE OF MONEY. Trust me, I know. I went to film school and regret it because if I had just gone out and worked on indie movies, I might actually be doing something cool in film rather than crewing my old classmates' films. If you just use the money that you'd have spent on film school on a decent short (pre-pro the shit out of that movie), you WILL get work afterward. I wish I had. If you spend that money on anything, funding a movie will do you more favors dollar for dollar.

Ask anyone in the industry if school will help at all before you spend money on a degree that no one will care about. Everything you would ever need to learn from film school is available on the internet...hell even the films you will want to watch have already been layed out for you.

If you're going to go to college, learn something that you can fall back on. Going to film school is like going to school for music or art or something. IT IS USELESS. Sorry. I just wish someone had told me this $89,237.00 ago.

edit: now with 100% more ranting.

[–]rorrr 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I confirm. Most art programs are a waste of money. Most of the students who major in art are ... mediocre at best. I have only met two students with good skills in 3 years of taking art classes.

Spend your money on a good camera+lenses. Canon 5D mark II is a great start, it will cost you a fraction of a real movie camera, and can produce amazing results. Start with cheap classic lenses like 50mm/1.8, and then buy new ones when you discover you really need more. Anything professional camera comparable in image quality will cost you at least 10 times as much (there aren't that many cheap full frame cameras).

Go to Barnes'n'Noble and read whatever books you want.

Hang out with other film makers. Find people like you and make a short movie.

Good luck!

Most of the students who major in art are ... mediocre at best.

My daughter is an crafts major. When she was working late in the studio, the professor told her, "I usually get only one student a year who is really good. The rest are so-so, and will probably do something else with their lives. Sometimes I get more than one, sometimes not even one. You're the one this year." (and no, I know what you're thinking, the professor wasn't trying to sleep with her.)

Yeah, I went to art school for a year, but then I transferred and am doing IR and Econ at one of the top schools in the country. I figure I can always do art, why should I be in school for it?

[–]mhf03 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I completely agree. A film school degree or an art school degree isn't going to improve your chances of getting work if you don't have any talent. It is much better to just get an internship and work in a field you want to be involved in even if you get paid little to no money, since even people who spent four years learning film have to go through the same exact process.

In fact, you could have a Masters you will still have to start off as a temp. You have to work your way up in the Movie Business unless you know a higher up or are going after a managerial position as opposed to physical production.

Vancouver is often compared to Melbourne (where I'm from) in terms of liveability and scenery. You like back bacon, and syrup from a tree!

O Canada, we sure like you a lot,

I apologize that this is going to be long, but reddit is very therapeutic for me in letting myself out.

I tried to change about 4 years ago, when I entered my 2nd year of college. I just wanted a change of pace in life, and was determined to become a better person.

It worked, for a while:

1) I worked out 5 nights a week and pushed myself each night on weights and a 1-mile run. By the end, I was running 6.5 minute miles and, for being 135lbs (I'm skrawny) I was consistently lifting 160-170lbs on most weight lifting machines.

2) In correspondence with working out more, I changed up my diet. I only ate meat at dinner, and usually made it chicken or pork rather than beef. For breakfast and lunch, I tried to focus on fiber-intense foods, vegetables, and fruit only. I would make an exception on the no-meat-for-dinner for soups and some salads. If I drank soda, it had to be at lunch and at lunch only, otherwise it was water or tea for me.

3) I began dedicating an additional hour to half-hour to my homework and studies. I would do the baseline amount of work required, then spend the extra hour to hour and a half to going over all of my work again and double-checking my understanding of concepts. I was an accounting major at the time... I didn't like it much, but I pushed on with my new study habits anyway. I switched to English a year later, and even transferred schools (more on that in a bit)

4) No more than 1 hour of videogames a day. I was, prior to making these changes, a gamer by self-identification. I am a gamer again now. Most days I wouldn't even play more than 30 minutes, and I began playing very simple, pick-up-and-play titles (no RPGs or anything that tried to push a story on me, really... so I stuck with things like Super Mario, Guitar Hero, Gran Turismo, etc...). I quit World of Warcraft, uninstalled it, destroyed my discs (this was before Blizzard allowed for digital download of the client).

5) I attended parties more and made an honest attempt to socialize more, to increased success. I'm not terribly attractive (I still suffer from the same plainly evident acne and skrawny stature that I've had since high school), so despite my efforts, I never got into a relationship like I sort of was seeking at the time (I ended up asking two different women -- turned down both times, one time being rather harsh and one being polite). I drank more, but I have never in my life been much of a heavy drinker -- so I never got reckless with drinking. Regardless of my failures on the relationship front, I made plenty more friends, and we even went out into the nearby wilderness and held a bonfire in my honor when I announced to my friends that I'd be transferring schools.

6) My original college was a great college, but it does not have a lot of national prestige. I was motivated to make a name for myself, so I transferred schools in order to get a more readily-recognized institution. I chose one of my big state colleges, and I was naive about its reputation at the time.

So how did it all fall apart?

1) The rejections from the women made me believe that I was not a more attractive person and wasn't really benefiting from working out or maintaining a good diet. I had also been rejected by two major crushes in high school and already struggled with self-esteem and, but I lost a lot of self-respect for myself at the time because of the rejections and my motivation to improve sort of tapered off. I gradually got back into videogames pretty hardcore (even resubscribing to WoW on and off since then) and resumed my outcast mindset, which has steadily faded as I've grown and matured over the past few years -- I understand that my interests are different but I do also acknowledge that it costs me experiences that I wish I had.

2) My naive idea that my state college with its recognizable athletic program and half-decent business program (which I switched away from after 1 semester following my transfer) ended up with vast disappointment. I just had to start my social life entirely over (though I did have a bit of an easier time since some of my good high school friends were already at the state college and we reconnected), ended up deciding I hated my major choice (entering my third year -- which is not easy to deal with), etc, etc... just stacked onto my inability to get a date came crashing down on my self-worth.

I feel like I'm on the cusp of another series of changes again. For one, I have vastly reduced my play time of videogames again, but mostly because I work full-time (and some over-time) for a little over minimum wage. I'm sick of living close to where I grew up, and want to move to a place where the local culture and attitude is different. Loneliness tends to get the better of me again. I have friends that are more useful for our shared hobby of videogames -- none of them are terribly good at encouragement or wanting to engage in new experiences, etc... I've attempted on multiple occasions to discuss how I feel like a change of pace but they simply insist that I'm cool enough as is -- I'm perfectly ok with restarting my social life once again. I'm frankly pretty sick of their... I don't know how to describe it.

I still like videogames and I tend to identify myself as a "gamer" still, but I don't feel like that's going to be a meaningful identity for me to hold when I get past my 20's. My friends just think it's going to work out being a gamer all my life. I want to meet different people, I want to dabble in other cultures, I want to dabble in making art (music, film, photography), but I want a network that encourages and critiques all of this. Hell, I even want to just help other people in any way I can -- y'know, be a real-life hero of some sort (I'm not looking for fame or glory or violent action, but I want to stimulate that feel-good feeling I get from being the hero in a videogame in a real-world context). ALl my friends want to do is get together at 9 to play Street Fighter. Forever and ever. And then watch some shows or movies. That's all good and fun but it's meaningless.

tl;dr* (AND YES IT WAS REALLY LONG) Tried to change once, but failed because I bottomed out on my self-respect. Feel on the cusp of change again but don't have an engaged, encouraging or understanding social network.

[–]SweetKri 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can be a gamer, and have self confidence, too! If you like games, play them. But if you balance it out with sunlight, exercise, and social interactions (and it sounds like you do), you can be a healthy gamer!

Your identity is your own, and if you feel like it's time to move on, well, maybe it IS time. Isn't there a couchsurfing reddit? :)

Good luck with your changes!

The sheer amount of nothing I do is actually pretty respectable. It doesn't help that my roommate will get my refills on drinks. I spent 6 hours in my bed in the middle of the day without getting up at all. I was streaming Seinfeld from my PS3, and whenever I needed something I just asked my roommate. I got like 5 or 6 refills, a bratwurst, a second controller after my first died, and he transfered some more files into my shared folder for me. I felt pretty bad about it, but my body just willed me to continue.

In exchange for doing all these small things, I help him stop being a pushover around other as well as help him with his homework. It's a good system.

Got a divorce, moved from one coast to the other to experience a totally differently lifestyle. Bought lawn furniture for the house, hung out with bikers, hunters, hippies and homeless. Got out of management and into a service industry where I am NOT the boss. Got off high blood pressure meds and daily Prilosec. Stop buying the nicer clothes, opting for functional instead. Gave up the sports car for a truck and got rid of the credit cards. My mid-life crisis turned into a major life perspective change and life is very good these days.

I've been living in Belgium since I was born. Got into a depression a few years ago (i'm 27) and since that moment I've not been able to sustain a normal, everyday modern lifestyle. I just can't cope with noise, stress or city-like situations anymore. I got a few good jobs in the IT bussiness but had to quit them because I couldn't handle it anymore.

Last month I made a radical desicion. I quit my job once again and moved to Germany to live with my girlfriend. We now have a great appartment in a small mountain village, where I can find my rest and peace. We don't have alot of money but we have enough to live a good life. I don't think I will ever regret this decision.

Three years ago I had my appendix out after quite a bit of unhealthy living, put a few things in context. Started shifting my habits and outlook, eating healthier.

Two years ago, I got tired of listening to my nagging girlfriend and grew the beard I always wanted.

6 months later she learned to love it. About that time I learned to love being healthy again. Stopped eating junk food and excess portions. Started exercising again, lost 40 lbs.

6 months ago, Got tired of girlfriend nagging me about being healthier then her, moved out and moved on.

2 months ago, Got tired of my office space like job, complete in cube farm. Got a new job and moved to DC.

Do you have some system for goal setting and tracking? Or do you just go on willpower? how would you describe your mindset/mentality/approach to each day/hour/minute? Sorry if my questions are confusing. I really want to do this, and every once in a while I will live a week or three like this... then it all just falls back. Any tips?

[–]albertone[S] 22 points23 points ago*

Fucking hell, I was writing down a answer to this question, but then I hit the back button and everything is ruined.

But yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes you have these days/weeks that you feel that you can do anything and everything is possible, but then couple of days later, everything is ruined.

I bought a notebook that I carry with me all the time. Every weekend I write down a list of goals that I want to do. Some of them are big and some of them are just simple and necessary. It's much better to write the goals down than to have it in your head. The enjoyment of crossing something off the list is awesome. I even add more and more things to the list so I can cross them off. When the week is finished and I haven't done the things I wrote down, I feel bad about myself.

For example I have this in my book for next week:

*Invite friends over for dinner (I've already crossed that off)

*Call my grandmother

*Go to the gym 4 times (Then I have another page for gym goals)

*Go to the hardware store an buy X

*Clean the house

*Run 10 km

*Fix my bike tire and my bag

*Not eat candy

*Cook something I've never cooked before

*Iron all my shirts

*Make a t-shirt

And many other things. Most of the things are very basic, but sometimes I add some "weird" stuff like "Learn how to knit", "make a chocolate icecream" and "swim in the sea (in the winter)".

I hope that will help! Like I said, it helps a lot to have your goals written down. Just try it.

About a year ago I strategically quit my engineering job with a couple years worth of savings to live off of. Took a community college 3d animation class (field I originally wanted to get into but was advised not to), took a long trip to Australia, travel every other month to visit friends and fam and I learned my family's secret recipes (all my mom's bro's/sis's are in the restaurant biz).

I spend the day teaching myself programming for video games, push polygons to get better at 3d modeling and workout. I'll usually spend the night at a bar and make it a point to talk to someone new (other than the bartender). I did lose 2 months to a crazy, fine younger drunk chick, was totally worth it.

Gearing up and building up the confidence to start a 3d modeling screencast blog and am actually getting ready to re-enter the workforce. Going to save more $ over a couple years to self start 5 solid business ideas that came out of the year off.

Oh my, yes. I believe it's called a quarter life crisis.

  • I quit WoW, and curb the addiction playing Minecraft sparingly.

  • I practice Japanese every day.

  • I also practice a little keyboard everyday.

  • I'm starting in to Indie game development, and I am trying to complete my first game for a competition this month.

  • I try to do a little excercise every day, and jog for atleast half an hour every week end.

  • I will now say yes to every social invitation, no matter how awkward or uninteresting I imagine it might be.

  • I no longer put sugar in my tea or buy crap from vending machines.

  • I have stopped blaming my parents for every single personality flaw I have.

You might want to consider getting yourself a hair clipper and start cutting your hair yourself. A good one will cost $30-$50, but it pays for itself in a few months.

[–]IbidtheWriter 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to do that, but then I realized that paying someone $5 to do it for me saves time. It takes me 35 minutes of shaving/cleaning up and I can never get all the hairs cleaned up as opposed to 10 minutes at the barber (It's also right downstairs from where I live). $5 is worth it for a better job/saved 20 minutes.

[–]mrtron 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A good example of some cases of over-optimization.

I really enjoy a haircut too. Sitting there is one of my most relaxing times of the month - doing completely nothing.

Plus, where I live right now they wash your hair for about 20 minutes massaging your scalp, then bring you tea and a cookie and massage your shoulders for about 5 minutes. And it costs well under 5$ :).

*If I buy clothes, I only buy them from the red cross and I tailor them self if I they don't fit. This has saved me a lot of money, AND I get more quality clothes there for 1-2$ than I would get for 150$ in a store, just because they are used.

Do you have any pictures of how you dress or look in your hand-tailored clothes? In principle, I support your spendthrift attitude and tailoring ability, but I'm having a hard time conjuring up an image of you in tailored thrift-store garb. Well... to be honest, I can conjure up an image, several actually, but so far I like you so I'm giving you the benefit of my doubt.

I was just lazy and after a couple of semesters there was always this one course i needed to pass and i just decided i rather not show up (this is in germany, no crazy college tuition here). Started going fulltime poker pro and couldn't be happier. You probably won't see me on TV anytime soon, but I make a decent living. I also started to go healthy, I cook a lot more, lost some weight and am exercising.

Recent changes to my life, hmm.

  • I kept my first full time job this summer, and got offered another from-home job within the same company afterwards (boosh).

  • Took up jogging.

  • I quit raiding in WoW so I spend less time on the game (although TF2 is sucking me in).

  • I'll get my drivers license this fall and

  • Have decided to go back to school, which starts next Tuesday.

Major problems still remaining:

  • Poor sleep schedule

  • Bad eating schedule

  • Excessive pot smoking

  • Must get out more, due to working from home

Start making your own soap. The process is extremely simple and once you get good at it, you'll only spend about 10 euro on ingredients and end up yielding enough soap for six months that works just as well as what you buy in the store. If you have access to your own herbs and flowers, it's even cheaper. The basic procedure is:

  • melt down a big pot of oils and fats (the kinds you use will depend a lot on the texture, mildness, fragrance, etc. that you are looking for)
  • mix lye with water (or sometimes tea made from aromatic plants) and let it cool down again (it'll get pretty fucking hot from the chemical reaction, so don't use a soft container)
  • pour the lye into the melted oil and agitate it with an electric wand-mixer
  • pour into soap-sized containers (or into one big container, let it cool down in a dark place for 24 hours, and then cut it into smaller bars)
  • ignore it for a month or two to allow it to finish soapifying

Not only is it dead simple and much cheaper than the real stuff, but it gives you a way to kill a boring afternoon. Plus you can become that cheap bastard everybody hates who gives away soap instead of buying real gifts.

Note: be really careful with the lye or you'll end up calling for an ambulance with whatever body part is in the least amount of pain.

Im a 20 year old college failout who felt just as you described. I started making an effort to do something productive everyday. I made an effort to do healthy things that i love, and to try my hardest every day. Once i pushed aside my willingness to give up on anything that feels awkward at first, i began to discover that absolutely love to dance. It has really taught me to fight awkwardness, and to fight through failure on the first 100 tries. If i failed all attempts the first day i discovered the patience to try again the next day, no matter gow many days/ weeks it might have taken. Some moves have taken me months of strength training and stretxhing to even start to see any results. Dance is continuing to shape my life and has taught me that learning new things is far from easy, but if i put in a little work into it everyday, and not just sit on your ass and play video games or watch tv all day, u can work on things which have really made me a healthier, stronger and more outgoing person with no end in sight right now. The sky's the limit i guess... Or maybe not ;) time to take what ive learned from dance into my schoolwork and see how far i can get with that.

For me it was over a bit of time, but yes.

I graduated college with a BS in business administration, major in marketing in early 2008 (we were on a quarter system so after the winter quarter), I took 4 1/2 years to finish, and gave the excuse that it was because I changed majors, but I just didn't work that hard and didn't care enough. I played a ton of WoW then too but even without that I didn't have the drive, if not that it would have been something else.

I got out and there were no jobs in interesting industries and I realized I didn't want to do just anything in the field and worked 1 1/3 years at a bank as a teller, I was completely miserable. I applied to the JET program to teach in Japan in the fall of 2008 but didn't make it to the interview stage.

Then I decided I did want to teach. I had been living cheaply with my parents so I had $12,000 saved up, and I quit my job, and am now 1 year through my graduate degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). On top of that, I'm taking a year off to teach in China and I've been in a small town here now for a bit over 2 weeks. Just taught my first class on Thursday. I'm a lot happier than I was working a dead end job at a bank or searching for a job that would just be there to gain experience so that I could maybe sometime in the future do something interesting.

I'm rooting for you on everything but ditching law school for film school. If you can do both, get law school out of the way, first, then study film. You're 21. Not to be cliche, but your road will be a lot more fun with some money in your pocket. And you could presumably finance a tight film with proceeds from practicing law.

I used to sit around all day long, thinking of awesome things to do but I'd end up doing absolutely nothing ...

... or doing quests in WoW for hours and hours.

I've really loved doing quests. Maybe because they would always give me a virtual feeling of success.

Recently, I decided that I could do the same thing IRL.

I grabbed a piece of paper and put the word 'Quests' on it. Then I started listing some of those awesome things I've always wanted to do.

Now, whenever I put a tick on one of those little checkboxes, I feel like the Mighty God of Awesomeness gave me a thousand high-fives, right before replacing my vision with happy images of non-overflowed string buffers, Teletubbies... and unicorns having sex.

Today, #1 quest was 'Post on reddit'. Quest completed...

Like a boss.
