Christian Fundamentalist’s Continued Abuse of Women

This blog makes a fairly valid point. Those of moderate faith are often quick to jump to the defense of their religion. They claim that not all members believe this way, or that others have twisted their faith into some cruel and ugly thing, without realizing that the cruel and ugly side of it certainly represents the views of the leadership, or has the greater weight of tradition behind it, or is better supported by scripture than their own views which they perhaps don't realize are more shaped by secular humanist ethics than religion.

It can be frustrating when such well meaning people get it so wrong, and even harder to get them to see where they've got it all mixed up, and in the process they just provide cover for those same old bigoted men who run their churches. Moderate theists are great salespeople for an awful product.

I was raised in a Southern, Christian (read: Baptist) home, and, sadly, was taught that I should live in submission to men. I was taught that when I got married my husband would be the head of the household and that if I were a good Christian wife I would defer ALL final decisions to him. The church I attended had no women in any place of leadership, except for with children (under 12). Most other churches in my area had woman as leaders in adult groups ONLY if the groups were all-female. These groups centered largely around "glorifying God" by becoming the best servant to your husband that you can. Only men can teach groups of mixed gender or groups of men. Again, this is typical of MOST of the southern baptist churches I visited/attended pretty much every Sunday for 19 years. I´m 25 now. These churches had anywhere from 50-400 attendees each. What I´m saying is, in certain regions, LARGE groups of women are being taught to "submit" (church´s word) to men in all areas of their lives from a very young age. It bothered me a lot, and before I stopped identifying as a Christian, I felt bad about having feelings that were considered sinful and subversive. It´s definitely not a healthy atmosphere for young women.

TL;DR- Lots of churches (typically Southern) repress women and make them feel guilty when they take issue to being told they are the weaker/submissive sex.

Maybe they're only moderate because society has set a barrier preventing them from moving to the extreme. Maybe, deep down, the average person actually want everyone else to be governed in a stricter fashion. Just not themselves.

When your title is christian fundamentalists abuse women I immediately picture a drunk man in a singlet punching up a woman, but when the article is about social policies and cultural divides the title does not match the content of that story.

Forceful, the thug shank, yet perilous, the fortress mind. Do they not shake hands by the gate, whispering "brother", one into the other's ear? Undreamt by any benevolent fay (she, mayhaps, shuffling in and out of our sad drama), a tale of extortion and binding greater than could ever be wrought by one, needy man, a pathology of mechanical satisfactions and reciprocity called "the way of things".
