I guess Americans have forgotten the reason our society has been so vibrant and successful relies on being inclusive of cultural and religious diversity.

I see it more as the Southern mentality famous in the civil war era has still not changed.

Super happy the town I grew up in has been in the news for this so much lately. I didn't realize it was such a hotbed of stupidity.
[–]migshark 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
So you happened to have left the town where the crime was committed? I think we can wrap this one up, Lou.

I stopped reading at "managed to stop having sex with their sisters long enough". Making offensive generalizations about people is what got us here in the first place.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
You guys must have never been to Sand Mountain, this shit is not uncommon in Tennessee, it's just no one ever talks about it. It's just like the burning of the construction equipment and the hanging of a black employee at a construction site in Chattanooga for some new offices.

My mom is from the States but has been happily living in Canada for close to 40 years. I asked her what she though of the whole mosque near ground zero issue, and the Tea Party etc. and she said "I wipe my hands of it. America is going to get exactly what it deserves."
I don't want to generalize the whole nation, but it is sad that the majority of American's are ruining it for the minority who want better.

It seems a bunch of “real Americans” managed to stop having sex with their sisters
Just like the unwashed heathen towel heads managed to stop beating their wives and molesting 14 year old fiances long enough to build it in the first place!
Does anyone here notice a pattern? How anyone could upvote this is beyond me.
Edit: Downvotes be damned, if you can't recognize that it's rhetoric like that we see in this blog posting-- that which seeks to stigmatize and dehumanize a large group of people based on nothing but stereotyping, therefore making it easier for them to be viewed as subhuman-- then the cognitive dissonance of Reddit has reached a new low.

I don't think this article is correct, I think all religions should be banned from all countries. Problem solved.
[–]dimmak 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
That mindset comes across as just another ignorant -ism. Having the freedom to dismantle religion for yourself is the path of least resistance. Focusing on education will do better at eliminating a crazed fringe population than banning the symptoms.
[–][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 1 year ago
It sure hasn't worked in the last 2000 years, are you expecting a miracle of education now? What needs to happen is this - the genetic predisposition for "wanting" religion must be removed from the species.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I would take this fundamentalist bullshit we're in right now over your genetic holocaust any day of the week. Take your bullshit sense of enlightened superiority and shove it.
You're a human being, just like everyone else. At least religious people can be compassionate from time to time.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year ago*
Haha, I'm a deeply genetically flawed human being, and because of that, I want better for my species. I see the bright side of our technology, a vastly better life for the future of our species. Holocaust? Why should you say such an offensive word? Your conclusion-jumping is just the sort of fight-reflex that needs to be removed through simple gene editing. New generations will simply be better.
The compassion I have is in supporting a solution that doesn't kill people, it just makes offspring better.

Okay so I am very much a Christian, which lately has gotten a bad name. I say let them build a mosque. There are no code violations or anything illegal about the whole matter. However, I do find their decision to be so close to "ground zero" to be a bit distasteful. If there were some "christian" nutjobs that killed 2,000+ people in an area populated with a majority of one religious faith other than Christianity, it would not be wise to build a Christian church there. It would be insulting.
[–]badhairguy 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
You mean sort of like the Native Americans and the Christian idea of Manifest Destiny? By your logic, every Christian church in America is a bit distasteful. I guess that's different because we almost wiped out their whole society instead of just 2,000+ people.
[–]lowercasepeople49 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I'm pretty sure that is not a Christian idea. That is greed in action wearing the mask of Christianity.
