So let me get this straight...

The FRC and Liberty Institute, both of which are explicitly religious organizations, want to argue in court that the National Day of Prayer is not an unconstitutional endorsement of religion?

These people are not the brightest crayons in the box. Have they ever heard of the Lemon test?

Dunno, but now I'm wondering why I don't remember learning about it in school. Read Dispatches from the Culture Wars if this sort of thing interests you.

Sigh

This is what makes it so hard to be polite to Christians who want to discuss political issues... THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE CONCERNING CHOICE OR PREFERENCE, THIS IS A CONSTITUTIONAL ISSUE. UNLESS YOU ARE HIGH RANKING MEMBERS OF STATE, JUDGES, OR EDUCATED CONSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARS, YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS PARTICIPATING IN THESE ARGUMENTS.

Their "rank" in society doesn't matter so much as their complete lack of understanding of the issue....

Guys, if prayer is so almighty good, why don't we do it five or six times a day. Other religions do that. Oh. Nevermind.

I've heard a lot of agitation lately about the need for Freedom of Religion and the inadequacy of the Freedom of Worship. I think this is really a straw man argument. Because the government cannot control us in our thoughts and because religious speech is protected, we have a very clear freedom to worship as we please. However, there is no absolute freedom of religion and should NOT be because some religious action and religious behavior violates the laws of a free and safe society (think of Abraham attempting to sacrifice Isaac; of parents refusing lifesaving medical treatment for children; of murdering infidels; etc.)
