The inclusion of Freemasons makes sense in the context of historical Belgian power structures. In a country where the Catholic church traditionally held extreme political and social power (often represented by Christian and conservative political parties), the Freemasons were the secular counter-weight (often represented by socialist and liberal parties). As a counter to the great (and very Catholic) Belgian universities, masons also founded the Université Libre de Bruxelles. And among the hundreds of churches and cathedrals littering Brussels, don't be surprised to find masonic symbols carefully integrated into the landscape.

However, the Masons have made it clear you cannot be a member if you do not believe in "God", and not just some Deist version, you have to believe in a supernatural creator that is concerned with, and meddles in human affairs. I think the reasoning for this is because a lot of their ceremonies are based on swearing to this deity as a basis for being loyal and trustworthy.

You're right, they have as much religious mumbo-jumbo as any proper religion.

Continental Freemasonry does not require a believe in the Grand Architect of the Universe. Although lodges that are part of this tradition are not recognised by Anglo Freemasonry and are deemed irregular.
