Also, this is not a haven from /r/Atheism's occasional mockery of religious ideals. /r/Freethought is a superset of /r/Atheism which expands the rational examination beyond religion. Please don't downmod comments because you expect them to be "more respectful" of unscientific beliefs. The scientific method trumps all. * What is [Freethought](http://www.freethoughtpedia.com/wiki/Freethought)? * [Freethinker F.A.Q.](http://www.freethoughtpedia.com/wiki/Freethinker) NOTE: This is not a "philosophy forum" unless it specifically relates to science and skepticism. I was born in the 1980's which was towards the end of the cold war. My feelings towards Russians has never been openminded or even friendly. Growing up watching movies where the bad guy was Russian or from the Eastern Bloc really has an effect on how you perceive the world. I am an open minded, reasoned human being but I cannot for the life of me openly trust a Russian. Though I can forget my prejudices and by pleasant there is always a nagging thought that they are liars/cheats. I need to get over it, but like I said, I KNOW it is there but it seems to continue to be there no matter how much I understand otherwise.

xauriel on Because of a "time bomb" effect, you may be far more susceptible to propaganda than you think.

Is it just me, or does this study sound really sketchy and unethical?

kobold2 on Because of a "time bomb" effect, you may be far more susceptible to propaganda than you think.

for example, if you take 9/11, most everyone consciously agrees that it was an inside job. yet innumerable articles (including the blogosphere) incorporate the msm induced idea that osama bin laden was behind it and argue their points based on this (imo false) platform when they discuss 'war on terror', middle east, islam, human rights and so on. this points to the fact of how easily we drop our guard over time due to *'peer pressure'* and how easily corruptible our *train of thought* is. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” -- j. goebbels in the present 'information overload' society we must be **absolutely aware** of the sources which influence our mind and psyche (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psyche_%28psychology%29) and we must make a choice of what to absorb and what to exclude (wapo, wsj, jp, nyt, reuters, cnn, msnbc, bbc, etc...)

just_a_regular_guy on Because of a "time bomb" effect, you may be far more susceptible to propaganda than you think.

>in the present 'information overload' society we must be absolutely aware of the sources which influence our mind and psyche Easier said than done (as I'm sure you know), we cannot constantly think about minor things that have no direct effect on our lives.
