People say they distrust the media, but they're talking about an emotional response. They don't even know what it would mean to be genuinely skeptical.

I think this is true (especially to younger people). I was born in the 1980's which was towards the end of the cold war. My feelings towards Russians has never been openminded or even friendly. Growing up watching movies where the bad guy was Russian or from the Eastern Bloc really has an effect on how you perceive the world. I am an open minded, reasoned human being but I cannot for the life of me openly trust a Russian. Though I can forget my prejudices and by pleasant there is always a nagging thought that they are liars/cheats. I need to get over it, but like I said, I KNOW it is there but it seems to continue to be there no matter how much I understand otherwise.

for example, if you take 9/11, most everyone consciously agrees that it was an inside job. yet innumerable articles (including the blogosphere) incorporate the msm induced idea that osama bin laden was behind it and argue their points based on this (imo false) platform when they discuss 'war on terror', middle east, islam, human rights and so on. this points to the fact of how easily we drop our guard over time due to *'peer pressure'* and how easily corruptible our *train of thought* is. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. When the subject finally comes up or becomes relevant, it is difficult not to be biased (even for the most intelligent among us).

yeah it is hard, especially in the beginning, but like everything else, with practice it can became our second nature... when we are reading up about a current controversial news, to make the conscious decision to skip articles from msm sites, to skip news on tv and to rely on more independent and investigative sources of info. for example i expect a person who takes care of his health by successfully resisting junk food advertising will also be more mindful of other types of propaganda. there is simply no other choice if one wants to stay healthy. it may be hard to achieve absolute separation, but every little bit makes a big difference. it's a process ...
