When people find things that make them happy, they're compelled to fight to sustain them. It's a weird mix of enlightenment and instinct: drug addiction, organized religion, stalker ex-boyfriends and obesity, we know these things are dangerous and wrong but we're compelled to do them anyway.

To me, these societal pains are promising results that humanity is, indeed, going through growing pains. I just wish I could be alive during the period when humanity is in its confident, productive and fun 20-30's, not these past couple thousand awkward years of obnoxious and unstable teenagery.

I understand that school prayer is an obvious promotion that government favors religion, as affirmed in Engel v. Vitale, but was wondering if you all knew of any cases that extended this to how religious organizations are tax-exempt in American tax law as long as they do not endorse distinct political candidates? Despite the fact that many of these organizations do, indeed, actively contribute to service and philanthropic causes, they are religious institutions nevertheless. It might be an over-extension of how I understand current judicial precedent, but philosophically at least, I believe it's a rather obvious perversion of the separation of church and state.

Any idea on current precedent and specific cases or further reading?
